McConnell Amendment Requires Photo ID for Federal Elections
Photo ID Required For Federal Elections?
We very rarely get "ALERTS" from the calm, composed folks at Electionline.org, so our heart pumped a bit when this crossed our inbox.

"An amendment to the immigration bill being debated in the U.S. Senate would make it mandatory for all voters to present photo identification before casting ballots in a federal election by Jan. 1, 2008.
Senate Majority Whip Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., introduced the amendment (S.A. 4021) to The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 (S.B. 2611).

Calls to McConnell's press secretary were not immediately returned, however, a staffer in his office said the vote on the amendment had not yet been scheduled."

1. They tried that here in Ga. and the Ga. supreme court shot it down.
Now, our law actually stated you had to have a State issued ID, so I don't know if that was the difference or not.

10. bogus
the instances of VOTER fraud have mostly been disproved as clerical errors, what fraud there is that is rampant is ELECTION FRAUD, ie, disinfranchisement and rigged machines...check out our Elections forum and educate yourself, you really need to learn the differance....

11. Voting is an awesome responsibility.
You need positive id to get a drivers license, a passport, social security so why not voting. It would be such a small thing to show a verified id, even your social security card. With computer networks like we have today it could be verified valid in just a few seconds.

12. I repeat go to our Election Reform forum
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=203

An ID is just like a poll tax...we are registered to vote, just the fact that we are standing before the poll worker, giving our name and address so we can be checked off a list, should be enough...here in Wisconsin we don't even need to pre-register, all we have to do is show up with a currant utility bill with our name and address on it to vote, we don't give party preferance (which is good- since Republicans like to steal voter lists and disenfranchise)how is an ID going to make a differance? Why do we need to prove we are who we say we are?

Voter Fraud is a red herring, it's the election fraud you have to be aware of....ID's cost money one way or another and voting is a right, not something we have to pay to do....

13. What is wrong with showing
and using social security card and number for your voter id. It would not cost the voter anything because the should already have a social security card.

14. Because that is not what they are asking for,
Edited on Fri May-19-06 04:42 PM by EC
they want the Real ID which will have a scannable strip that is to be used for everything...that's what all this ID bullshit is leading to, do you want to show an ID that when scanned gives all your info out to whoever is scanning it, just to go state to state, make a purchase, get a loan or even to get your cash out of the bank? Try and figure out what this could lead to in the wrong hands...Do a seach on Real ID, it's already passed and we are supposed to have them by 2008...and in order to get it, you have to provide 3 types of identification...

And again, Why?

The mass stealing of votes is much easier and more rewarding, what good is it to have a few people vote twice, when they can add on millions through a modem?

6. They'll do anything to try to keep voting to a minimum
if we ever had a 80% turnout for an election the GOP would be wiped off the map.

15. Could somebody explain to me why this is a bad thing?
Edited on Fri May-19-06 07:28 PM by linazelle
I am serious. I don't understand the implications--and I fear that there are millions more in my shoes. It seems benign on the surface--most people would "sleep" this. Of course the name Mcconnell sets off all my own alarms.
