Prez Of WH Correspondents' Association Hadn't Seen Much Of Colbert Before Booking Him For Dinner...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2006/05/02/prez-of-wh-correspondents_n_20250.html

<snip>

Mark Smith, a reporter for The Associated Press who is president of the White House Correspondents' Association, acknowledges that he had not seen much of Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central before he booked him as the main entertainment for the association's annual black-tie dinner on Saturday night. But he says he knew enough about Mr. Colbert — "He not only skewers politicians, he skewers those of us in the media" — to expect that he would cause some good-natured discomfort among the 2,600 guests, many of them politicians and reporters.

What Mr. Smith did not anticipate, he said, was that Mr. Colbert's nearly 20-minute address would become one of the most hotly debated topics in the politically charged blogosphere. Mr. Colbert delivered his remarks in character as the Bill O'Reillyesque commentator he plays on "The Colbert Report," although this time his principal foil, President Bush, was just a few feet away.

1. Unsurprising.
I saw John Irving last year, and he told a funny anecdote about having been invited to some White House dinner by VP Dan Quayle during the Poppy Bush administration. Being an ardent admirer of Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, which includes blistering indictments of the Reagan/Bush administration's patronage of the Iran-Contra scandal, I had to ask him if he thought any of those Repub idiots had ever read any of his stridently (subtextually) liberal books. That elicited a laugh and his supposition that no, none of them were probably at all familiar with his novels.

These Repub douchebags merely want to latch onto truly talented people, knowing virtually no one who subscribes to their political agenda has any talent whatsoever (Kid Rock, Britney Spears, Toby Keith, etc.) -- except perhaps for self-promotion, theft, dissembling and cowardice.

2. God works in mysterious ways, doesn't he? and HE certainly wanted people
to listen to very serious stuff the bushits are doing...and so, HE placed Colbert at the WHC dinner...and what better way to talk about very serious stuff through the use of comic relief and irony. I'd say GOD is on OUR side.
