University of Miami, janitors secured the right to form a union !

Miami Janitors Win!

On May 1, after their 9-week, hard-fought strike at the University of Miami,
janitors have secured the right to form a union and raise living standards
for their families.

More than 4,000 of you sent letters to UM President Donna Shalala urging her
to ensure workers’ rights to exercise their freedom to unite their strength
in the workplace.

So far, workers have won a 25% raise and access to health insurance for the first time.
Many students, religious leaders, community organizations, and national leaders offered their support.
This inspiring victory came on the same day millions of immigrant workers and their
supporters took part in a national day of action to highlight their contributions to
the nation.
The janitors in Miami face what many immigrants encounter every day on the job
– harassment, abuse, and civil rights violations.
Instead of sitting quietly on the sidelines, they stood up.

earning shitty wages, that no American can live on!
Corporations like UNICCO Service Company and (ie. U of Miami; Harvard...etc.)
paying crap wages and importing/enticing the illegal's to do those jobs!!
There are American citizens who work as janitors!
Not just immigrants...legal or illegal.

Unicco janitors' raise
(still below poverty-level) $372 a month

Cost to janitors to provide health insurance for their families-- $493.50 a month

And I doubt these are full-time jobs...maybe some of them are...

Snip-->OK...This woman is full-time....

Zoila Garcia has been a full-time UNICCO janitor for more than two years and makes only $6.70 and hour.
She has worked ever since arriving from Cuba in 1983 but still lives in a trailer and is now facing bankruptcy.

She's been in the US for 23 years!! Why did she stay at that job??
That's $13,936 per year...
I wish they'd post the whole story!
