Lieberman polling very well
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/April%202006/Connecticut%20Senate%20April.htm

Joe Lieberman (D) 59%
Paul Streitz (R) 23%

Joe Lieberman (I) 47%
Ned Lamont (D) 20%
Paul Streitz (R) 17%

I want Lamont in the senate, but I sure don't see much evidence of Lieberman's support dwindling. His approval ratings in SurveyUSA are really good too.

4. They aren't as progressive as DUers, in my opinion.
DU doesn't represent your average democrat, again, in my opnion.
It is the same reason Nelson's approval ratings in Nebraska are so high (the highest in the nation according to SurveyUSA) but DUers generally don't dig him.

9. He friggin
SUCKS!!!!-he did nothing to defend MY voting rights down here in Florida during the 2000 debacle-an election I was NOT allowed to vote in because of some fine work by that Texas company purging my name off the rolls-and the GOP operative making fake phone calls trying to"straighten it out" for me on a constantly busy cell phone.OK-they won that time but I will never ever vote for a republican again-and I have before...Oh yea Joe Lieberma? He refused to believe this creap was going on,even when Randi Rhodes was telling him the facts on the ground here.He did nothing...

Edited on Thu May-04-06 03:36 PM by w4rma
Lieberman. It's nothing more than name recognition. Lamont needs more resources to be able to get his name out and overcome years of incombancy.

Note that if Lamont won the primary, the nationwide news surge would likely give him that name recognition, assuming big media doesn't censor coverage of him.

Maybe the fact that Joe is up by such a big margin is because they see Lamont as what he is, a phantom of the blogs, and only 15% of Ct voters will not vote for Lieberman because of war stance.

neoliberal economics. Not only does he support the war in Iraq and would almost certainly support a military attack on Iran he stands solidly behind Bush and the neocons and supports a militarist worldview that is just plain downright loony!

There is nothing mainstream about that at all!

Still if voters have been conditioned not to care about issues and vote only on image, he may likely win.

It doesn't matter what YOU(unless of course you live in CT)think of the Connecticut Senator, it matters what the voters of Connecticut think of their Senator. Apparently they think he's OK.

National polls show that people are unhappy with the Republican controlled Congress. These polls don't tell us what they think of their own Representatives. It doesn't follow automatically that voters will vote their Reps out.

And the difference between that and his support from GOP and Ind is fairly small (5% or so)

That he also draws heavily across all political lines speaks to how the people of Connecticut see him.

On edit: for clarification I am using the recent Quinnipac poll

He will never support a US troop withdrawal from Iraq as Murtha, Feingold, and Kerry are advocating, and he will be an enthusiastic advocate of new wars against Iran, Syria, Hizbollah, etc.

Holy Joe supports Bush's "unitary presidency" power grab, and further infringements of our civil liberties.

21. We should not expect Lamont to win
Edited on Thu May-04-06 11:56 AM by Jack Rabbit
However, if he forces Lieberman to explain himself, he's done his job.

There are two reasons to run for public office:
  • To win; or
  • To discuss public issues.
Lieberman has not given a statisfactory explanation of his support for the war in Iraq. He has not been forced to do so. The war is clearly a policy failure and the reasons for it were clearly bogus. Moreover, the war is identified with Bush and, therefore, support for the war is support for Bush. A leading Democratic senator should explain to his constituants why he should continue to represent them as a Democrat while supporting Bush's war.

27. If you looked at 2003 Dem presidential primary polls
it looked like Lieberman was going to win in a cake walk.

Thats not how it turned out, is it?

Remember 2 things:

1. It is 3 months from a primary, and 6 months from a midterm election. At this point people are not paying attention to the race and are voting on name recognition only. Lieberman is the only name most people recognize at this point.

2. Ned Lamont has a 9% name rec figure. that's to be expected. He is new to politics, he has NOT been on TV and it is 3 months out from the primary. among those who have heard of him, he has a 6 to 1 favorability advantage with 2 on the fence. and in the Q poll, he wins 19% of the vote, more than DOUBLE those who know who he is and more than triple those who know and like him.

As Ned gets on TV and gets his petition drive going, his numbers will increase. Joe's numbers according to the survey USA poll have been falling among independents and democrats (not republicans).

3 months, in a state of 3 million people is plenty of time.

This will be a race.

"NEW HAVEN - Ned Lamont's United States Senate campaign opens a New Haven office this week. The public and press are invited to an Open House Thursday, May 4 at 5 p.m. at the new office on 205 Church St., Suite 501.

After a brief welcome and address from Annie Lamont, Ned's wife, campaign staff will continue training volunteers to collect petitions to ensure Lamont's presence on the August 8 primary ballot".

Maybe this will help things along.

What's your point - that it's silly to be so opposed to illegal wars that support for same should be overlooked in favor of commonly-held positive domestic ideals?

Forget it - there are plenty of people in the world who hold the domestic stances Lieberman does (sans the "freedom of religion doesn't mean freedom from religion" crap) that DON'T support illegal wars, and if I were in CT, I'd vote for one of THEM.

If it was something a little less world-endangering (not to mention morally and ethically reprehensible) as supporting the illegal invasion and occupation of a country that didn't attack us, you might have a point. But, based on your posting history, you don't - not one that resonates with THIS liberal progressive, anyway.

Well Joe, that’s not very helpful. I mean, I know that you’ll never need emergency contraception at two o’clock in the morning after having been brutally raped. So I guess it’s easy for you to disregard any woman who is unlucky enough to have gone through that trauma"
