2008 Democratic Convention Watch (5-2-06 update)
From the blog: http://demconwatch.blogspot.com/

Who's really in the running to host the convention - 5/2 update

Looking at everything so far, I think the 2008 Democratic Convention is going to be held in one of 5 cities: Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, New Orleans or New York, with Denver the clear front-runner.

The reasoning is pretty straightforward. Denver and Minneapolis are clearly actively pursuing the convention. Detroit and New York are also strong candidates, with strong histories of hosting or bidding for previous conventions, and little negative press attached to the bids. New Orleans remains a sentimental choice for many.

Anaheim and Las Vegas are still hanging around, but clearly Denver is the class of the West here, and I don't see how they would lose out to another Western city, especially with the Californian chair of the DNC Western Caucus wearing a "Denver 2008" button.

San Antonio and Orlando have officially dropped out, Phoenix has essentially unofficially dropped out, and Dallas is on the way out also.

6. I'd sign on to that....
I won't be an official delegate, but I can swing a hammer, then sleep anywhere! What a message that would send to the country...hope the DNCC is paying attention!

2. The next "cut" is May 19
As you've said, most of these cuts will be self-inflicted, with cities pulling out themselves.

See my latest post at 2008 Democratic Convention Watch. Also, what do folks think about the union issues in Denver that I just posted about? - Matt

4. convention in August right?
like maybe Aug 29? Like the 3rd anniversary of Katrina?? New Orleans would make good theater but terrible timing if Ma Nature has a cruel sense of humor

5. 1 day before Katrina anniversary
The acceptance speech (last day of the convention) will be on Thursday, August 28, 1 day before the 3rd anniversary of Kartina.

11. Do you actually know what it's like in NO in August?
This is no slam against NO, but I sure wouldn't want to go there in August. Same reason most people don't visit Florida in the summer either!

I happen to think Mn would be the best choice. Right in the middle of the red area of the country...maybe we can really impress them out there!

9. Denver
Denver put together very solid convention bids in 2000 and 2004. From what I recall, the 2000 Denver bid was viewed as the best proposal (ahead of Los Angeles and Boston), but the Gore camp was determined to hold the event in California for fundraising purposes.

Colorado's a fast-growing swing state, and Denver has a Dem mayor (Hickenlooper), some good members of Congress (DeGette, Udall in the suburbs) and a Dem US Senator (Salazar). It's a good choice.

Fortunately, Earned Run Average isn't a deciding factor!

10. 2000, but not 2004
Denver didn't go after the convention in 2004, but they were a finalist in 2000, and they have a great shot at hosting in 2008.
