Hoyer(D), House minority whip: Bush deserves some respect
House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took on a rare role yesterday as a defender of President Bush.

Hoyer came to the defense of the commander in chief after Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where the president took a drubbing from comedian Stephen Colbert.

“I thought some of it was funny, but I think it got a little rough,” Hoyer said. “He is the president of the United States, and he deserves some respect.”

“I’m certainly not a defender of the administration,” Hoyer reassured stunned observers, but Colbert “crossed the line” with many jokes that were “in bad taste.”

Of all the innocuous, non-committal things he could have said, why this? If he just HAD to compliment bush, how about "he's a sport" or "comics can get rough, what does one expect"?

Are they all just a big fat BOO! away from Zell Miller Time?

6. Hoyer can kiss off- But at least this gets Colbert more press! YAY!
Edited on Tue May-02-06 09:39 PM by Dr Fate
It was HILARIOUS- who is Hoyer to criticise a comedian??? Who is he-Roger Ebert?

Bush has never respected me, Hoyer or any Democrats- Hoyer is acting like a frightened little girl-

Who is Hoyer trying to impress- 60% plus AGREES with Colbert and would think it was funny if the TV showed it.

Demanding respect? I dont know how to return what I never got.

8. Why should we respect a president
who spits on the Constitution, arbitrarily decides which laws he will or will not obey, spies on his own people without warrants, has made the USA a nation of torturers, squandered billions, etc. Does Bush have any "respect" for our fallen troops when he can't even drag his sorry ass to one of their funerals? But Bush has plenty of respect for keeping Halliburton and Exxon stock & profits high and percolating. I'm also waiting for the presidential Kenny Lay/Enron pardon if the jury condemns. Hoyer is a disgrace and the kind of Democrat who will drive away the base of the Democratic party. No wonder so many Democrats are disgruntled/fed up with the party. When we desperately need all Democratic legislators to put up a consolidated front against Bush & the neocons who are destroying this country we get a cheap circus act like Hoyer sticking his tongue up Bush's rump and offering hackneyed lectures/platitudes about respecting the president. I say screw that. Respect has to be earned & deserved. Bush only deserves scorn & vituperation. I swear, sometimes I think the Democrats really are hopelessly inept and self-destructive.

Not frightened as in concerned about what they are doing to our children's world- but frightened of them as to his own personal posisition amongnst them.

15. Most moderate-to conservatives with a sense of humor would find it funny.
I'd like to know exactly which joke he feels was disrespectful and would turn off moderate democrats.

16. Telling the truth also "makes DEMs look weak on defense"
Just so you have all your Hoyer-style talking points straight.
