Our country only has one language? Say something not in English.
Edited on Tue May-02-06 11:03 AM by KyndCulture
I love my country and my first language is English but this argument is BULLSHIT!!!

I speak 2 languages. My second language albeit VERY VERY limited should be more accepted here...Not less..... It's Tsalagi.

And because the computer can't repro the letters, I'll do this phonetically as my mom taught it to me..

nvwaa-hadohiiya-aha-dv

And my brothers and sisters, that means PEACE in the Native Cherokee language.

And we can't sing the "star spangled banner" in another language???????

President Bush right: anthem ought to be sung in English
Monday, May 1, 2006 11:01 AM EDT
A Spanish-language version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” debuted April 28.
“I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English,” President Bush said.
Bush also expressed his disapproval of today's national work stoppage called to dramatize the importance of immigrants to the U.S. economy.
“I'm not a supporter of boycotts,” Bush said.
The Spanish-language version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” features Wyclef Jean, hip-hop star Pitbull and Puerto Rican singers Carlos Ponce and Olga Tanon.
“Nuestro Himno” - “Our Anthem - rewrites some of the English version.
The second stanza, for example, says, “My people keep fighting. It's time to break the chains.”
We agree with Bush.
“I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.”
The emergence of a Spanish-language anthem and today's boycott are divisive elements in a national debate over how to deal with an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of major U.S. cities demanding that citizenship barriers be lowered.

“One of the things that's very important is when we debate this issue that we not lose our national soul,” Bush said on this highly charged issue during a Rose Garden news conference.

Americans need to focus on the things they have in common - not differences that can keep them apart.

16. ALGEBRA?
Weapons of Math Destruction

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a
public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession
of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he
believes the man is a member of the notorious al-Gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-Gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions
by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of
absolute value. They use secret code names like "x" and "y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns", but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country."

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God had wanted
us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more
fingers and toes. I am gratified that our government has given us a sine that it
is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs who are willing to disintegrate us with calculus disregard. the President said, adding: "Under the circumferences," the President said, "we must differentiate their root, make our
point, and draw the line."

Attorney General Gonzales said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my
ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertainty of: though they continue to
multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."

3. We don't promote learning second and third languages
in American public schools.

The exception is learning English as a second language.

We are woefully behind in this area.

PS. I learned Swedish as a child. My parents
immigrated from Sweden after WW II.
In high school, I studied German. After
living in SoCal for 50+ years I finally learned
some Spanish.

10. you have to have language to communicate.
I am inclined to think that having people able to communicate is a good thing. Pretty much that means speaking the same language. But at some point, someone is going to have to leave their comfort zone and learn something new. In most countries, new comers are expected to make that effort.

Maybe we should decide what that common language should be.
Maybe go with German.

But if people don't make some commitment to communicate, we aren't much of a people.

But maybe we use this whole deal to get some kind of anthem that people can actually sing

18. "Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer."
Das tut mir leid.

My parents actually had a book of children's poems in German they'd read to us, thinking we'd enjoy the sounds or something, even though we couldn't understand it... I even remember one:

Ich und du
Millers Kuh
Millers Esel
Da bist du.

A rough translation (I did study German later):
Me and you
Farmer's Cow
Farmer's Ass
That is you.

25. German
BTW I mentioned German because it almost became the official language when this whole nation started.

The Germans have heavily influenced American English.

It looks like some people have some unhappy experiences with German culture, but it is worth noting that they are way ahead us in living conditios, public transportation, education and environmental.
protection. There are worse languages to learn, and as I say, if you can't speak the same language, you can't communicate very well.

But apparently their lullabies really suck.

24. we aren't English, we're Americans.
From Mississippi to the Dakotas, from Los Angeles to Tallahassee the language of our nation just like the people of it are an amalgam of others.

I suppose there will always be those that will feel threatened by change but the ethnic profile of America continues to change and so will our language. There are and always will be those that stick with the their old familiar ways but our shared culture is always in flux. Personally, I think that diversity has made our country a better place.

What was that other non-english phrase?
E pluribus unum

Annuit Coeotis atque Novus Odro Seclorum

One other thought about this stupidity:

Approximately two thirds to three fourths of the English vocabulary is non-Anglo-Saxon in origin. For example, (R)republican is from Latin and some linguists believe it is originally Etruscan.

27. A reporter asked McClellan today why the WH website...
is also in Spanish. McClellan gave some BS answer about some people not having English as their first language so they may want to read the site in Spanish. The reason it's BS is it's the same reason people want to sing the Anthem in Spanish. And that's not ok? The next time I see Bush pandering to a Spanish-speaking crowd by trying to say something in Spanish, people should stand up and shout "hypocrite"-in Spanish!
