<snip>Bush stayed out of combat in Vietnam while serving as a pilot in the Air National Guard. Democratic leaders have challenged Bush's record of attendance in the guard in 1972, seizing on an issue that could play to Kerry's strengths. snip
On Sunday, Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) Chairman Terry McAuliffe thrust the issue to center stage by telling ABC's "This Week" television program that he welcomed a debate over military service if Kerry won the party's presidential nomination. snip
"I look forward to that debate when John Kerry, a war hero with a chest full of medals, is standing next to George Bush, a man who was AWOL in the Alabama National Guard," McAuliffe said. "George Bush never served in our military in our country. He didn't show up when he should have showed up." snip
"The liberals are seizing on this notion of the liberal war hero Kerry vs. the chicken hawks" at the White House, said Doug Brinkley, a presidential historian and author of "Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War."
"In a post-Sept. 11 America, where public service is being honored anew, Kerry's military record, which is in such stark contrast to George Bush's, will be a campaign issue," Brinkley added.
