Polls open to cold, overcast skies - light turnout
Associated Press
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Polls for South Carolina's Democratic presidential primary opened Tuesday under overcast skies and chilly temperatures - and early reports indicated a light to moderate turnout.
Turnout was light by midmorning at a polling place in northeast Columbia, workers said. And just 24 people had voted by 9 a.m. at a Newberry precinct, where roughly 800 people are registered to vote.
But the cool, hazy weather didn't discourage Democratic party officials. Executive Director Nu Wexler said the party wasn't ready to characterize voter turnout Tuesday morning.
State party officials are hoping that by dropping a controversial voter oath requirement just hours before Tuesday's first-in-the-South primary, independents and even some Republicans will flock to the polls.
