Edwards Will Drop Out and Endorse Kerry if He Loses SC
For Edwards, It All Comes Down to South Carolina

By David S. Broder
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 3, 2004; Page A01

GREENVILLE, S.C., Feb. 2 -- For John Edwards, Tuesday is the day of reckoning.

If the native son of South Carolina loses the presidential primary here to John F. Kerry -- a possibility that his entourage nervously acknowledges is real -- the decision will be simple. Edwards will congratulate Kerry, quickly endorse the Massachusetts senator as the Democratic nominee and head home.

He will feel no shame, he said in an interview, in losing to a man he regards as an upright politician, worthy of the presidency.

But if he beats Kerry in South Carolina, Edwards said he looks forward to challenging him for the top spot -- no matter what the odds against his success.

1. If Dean and Clark continue to slide, they will have to ponder the same
I don't want to think this is over already, but each candidate will have to make a decision about how long they want to stay in the race. It will be interesting to see who gets out when.

3. This was an overheard conversation, intentional or not, I
don't know. Edwards has already responded to this.

As a Kerry supporter with Edwards a really close second, I wish he hadn't said it.

5. This was not a quote from Kerry. It sounds like rumor-mongering.
Who would do that?

6. If you like sausage
Stay out of sausage factories.

This is a tough business, the Democrats are up against the dirtiest players in the biz. It's par for the course. The sooner we dispense with the liberal nice-guy crap, the stronger we will be.

The Republicans are trying to paint the Democrats as "angry", "ngeative" and "pessimestic", while Bush is "positive and focused on fighting terror".

For once lets not run from this, lets show some fight, I have no problem with what Kerry said, he is doing what is necessary to win. What's wrong with that?

I'm an Edwards supporter BTW.

4. Edwards was denying this on the Today Show
Katie Couric asked him, after he denied it, if DAvid Broder had gotten it wrong. Edwards said that he didn't answer the question that way.

I don't see in this article that Edwards actually said anything about that.
