CAN Bush fire Rumsfeld?
Let's not be naive here.

This is Rumsfeld and Cheney's show. Bush is at best #3.

1. He could since he is the president and members of the cabinet
serve him. But it is doubtful that Bush would ever "fire" Rummy--if anything, Rummy would step aside as if it were his decision.

18. Of course he could. But he won't.
I'm sure when he says he thinks rummy's doing just fine, he's actually sincere. He actually DOES think rummy's doing a good job, because rummy's doing what he wants. And when rummy's boss is one of the staggeringly worst and most medacious, deceitful, arrogant, duplicitous incompetents that ever walked the earth, no wonder he'd think rummy's doing just fine. :grr:

2. It seems the accepted Rep. talking points are that "Rummy is arrogant but
that is no reason to fire him." In fact, according to J.C.Watts, the latest apologist for Rumsfeld on CNN, it might even be a good quality for him to have...A couple of people earlier today said more or less the same thing....What an immense JOKE!

3. Bush doesn't have NEAR enough power to fire Rumsfeld.
I laugh every time I hear that old mare trotted out about how Rummy has submitted his resignation twice and George has refused it!

I imagine if George WERE to get drunk enough to try and fire Rummy, Rummy would slap him...matter of fact, that might explain some of the cuts and bruises that I thought were Pickles-sourced?

7. I have concluded that little request note to Kindaloosey
wasn't really the plaintive whine that it was widely purported to be. It was, I think, a brag--telling her that he had learned to go by himself but didn't want to.

I am thinking of the picture of Rumsfeld with Saddam Hussein. Some people were worried that Saddam Hussein would spill the beans during his trial. Maybe Rummy would spill the beans if "asked" to resign.

16. Technically, yes
Even if Rummy and Unca Dick are running the show to the extent you suggest, if Bush, putatively the President, were to announce on television and announce that he has accepted Rumsfeld's resignation, Rummy had better be cleaning out his office.

they know too much. He can't risk pissing them off.
