A cautionary note to the peace loving Dems ........
The 06 election cycle is going to be one UGLY time. As our friend kentuck so wisely asserts in this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2569181 the Dems are going to be in for the shitstorm of shitstorms for the simple matter that the Republicans have no credibility on any damned issue at all anymore. They have nothing left but the machine they so carefully built over the last few decades.

If you think the Swiftboaters were bad, you ain't seen nuthin' yet. And if you think Kerry's campaign was wrong in not responding ... well ... swiftly, or if you think they were right to take the high road, just wait.

We are in for a season of gutter politics that will make gutters blush. And we had damned well be ready for it. Our candidates would do well to practice starting yesterday. They might try such exercises as eating live rodents and sitting on fire ant hills. This is not the season for intellectual discourse.

Knife fights will be more the norm.

Sharks and Jets.

Bicycle chains and zip guns.

Roll a pack of Camels in your tee shirt sleeves, dear candidates.

Are Ready to Rumble???????

1. I rumbled in 2000 and 2004 and I'm ready again
I'm happy to say that here in South Mississippi we have a democratic congressman, Coast Guard Vet who is very comfortable in a knife fight. I think there will be a reluctance by dems to take the high road this time. And the grand ole party is going to discover what its like to fight someone on the offensive. They aren't going to like it a bit. The gop will be extremely desperate because they know the citizenry is ready to throw them out.

9. I've always been a fun loving easy going guy
(except when one of my Sailors fucked up) but being called a coward three times by chickenhawks prior to the war in Iraq kinda pisses one off and cements thoughts in ones head which turn into actions at appropriate times. I've only lost it once when a 20 something yahoo who has never served in the military told me to join the Army to prove my love of country by butting his way into a conversation at a local watering hole which had nothing to do with the war. If "conservatives" want to continue to support those who want us to stay in Iraq, I say bring it on. Hang in there Teammate.

I always found that a verbal ass whipping from a fired up Chief was a helluva lot more effective on young Sailors than a paper trail. Although on occasion I think some of my charges would rather have gone to meet the old man at Captain's Mast, they in the long run were better off having a little private chit chat with the Chief.

2. There is a great deal of truth to what you write
I believe that your's and Kentuck's observations are only half of the story. In order for Dems to be effective in countering the onslaught of the GOP slime Blitzkrieg is to recognize the field of battle and our place on it. IT IS VITAL that Dems and Liberals realize that THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RELY ON A FAIR AND IMPARTIAL MEDIA!!!! Without formulating strategies to counter and neutralize this uneven access to broadcast and print media, Dems will have an almost impossible task of being heard. I propose a commitment by DU'ers to act as independent media by reaching out even more to all the people in our lives that support the GOP and BushCo. It will be vital if we have a prayer of keeping the Dem numbers high enough so as not to have the election stolen once again. Even then, judging by the past, it may not be enough.

Also, I believe it is very important that we continue to push the DNC and all Dems to realize they are playing against a stacked deck when they appear on many of these network "news" shows like Tweety, MTP etc. I believe that a strategy to attack these people PERSONALLY for their bias does us more help than harm. Unless these guys are directly confronted with their credibility, the uninformed American public will continue to assume they are credible. In short, the cable news whores and the other news whores have to be dealt with by insisting that Dems be disciplined on message and prepared to do battle. Ignoring this problem is a terrible mistake.

My two cents!

5. Vinnie, I got one word for you .... AMEN!
That is spot on. I've long been saying that the media, in my view, is an even bigger problem than the voting machines.

I know that's debatable and my mind is open, but that's still how I see it.

3. "Are you better off now than you were before the Republicans took over?"
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 12:40 PM by JohnnyRingo
Thats an old rhetorical question that's been used as recently as the '04 election, but I believe it's more relevant today than it was two years ago.

Every week reveals a new series of strikes against companies who seek to pay less and charge more. Every day brings light to failed foreign policy as caskets return without any visible progress. Every month our once great nation slips further into debt with no indication or desire to reverse the trend.

Only a fool or a zealot would hope the newest legion of Republicans would do anything but make things even worse for the citizens of this country.

The negative campaigns you correctly foresee should be viewed as a tactic of a party that's out of fresh ideas and desperate to clutch onto the power that has devastated the American Dream.

edited for spelling
