1. He was...incredible...in Capote.
While I didn't find the movie to my tastes I found his acting exceptional. Exceptional acting is what's needed to portray a figure like Capote or Rove for that matter.

2. Coming to a theatre near you. Ned Beatty as Karl Rove
getting raped in prison, rather than in the backwoods.

5. He could play a convincing Mandy Moore, too
He's an excellent actor.

As is Mandy Moore -- although she's not yet quite to the point where she could play a convincing Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The best actors tend to have a protean quality to them. Our age is quite fortunate -- most of the best actors in history are alive now, per capita, and not just because of the larger population.

Of course, the same thing must be said of ratbags like Karl Rove.

6. I admire Hoffman's "career courage," because...
...I don't think ANYONE would accuse him of choosing roles based exclusively on the characters being completely "likable."

I think it would be incredibly difficult to do an accurate "dramatized" portrayal of Rove. If you demonize him TOO much, he becomes a cartoon. If it's a freeper film "celebrating" his "victories," it tells half the story. He had victories and people got screwed...some careers permanently ruined...and that all adds up to one tough acting job.

I think the photo I posted bears more than a little physical resemblance...especially the eyes...but yes, absolutely, TALENT is what makes an actor believable.

8. He could play a convincing *anyone*
Hoffman is, in my opinion, *the* character actor of his generation. And he's only starting to really get noticed now. I anticipate a long and excellent career, with the probably exception of his "I'm taking the money and running!" upcoming role in Mission Impossible 3, which of course is a "Mission Impossible" movie in only two regards: music and title. Otherwise it's just Tom Cruise blows shit up. But hey, I'm not gonna see it anyway. :)
