Um....nobody has anything to say about their favorite Democrat? Favorite Democratic initiative? Local Dem politics? Anyone? Someone?

Ok...I'll start,

March 30, 2006 (313) 961-5670

Conyers on the Curtailing of College Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Conyers, Jr., Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee voiced his opposition toward H.R. 609, the so-called “College Access and Opportunity Act,” which reached the House floor today.

“H.R. 609 creates greater problems in providing financial assistance for college students, and will lead to graduates inheriting greater debt,” Conyers said.

The legislation fails to make college more affordable for Americans falling within the low- and middle-income brackets – it removes the 6.8 percent interest rate cap on student loans that were supposed to be implemented on July 1, 2006.

H.R. 609 also holds the Pell Grant at $6000 per student allocation until 2013. As a result of inflation, the maximum Pell Grant has already decreased by 50 percent in purchasing power over the last two decades, from 84 percent to 42 percent, leaving students with more to pay at higher interest rates.

This bill also revokes a student’s ability to secure a low-fixed interest rate, by prohibiting them from consolidating their loans while in school or during the 6 month grace period, directly following graduation. In addition, it bars married couples from consolidating their student loans with their spouses.

These factors produce more obstacles which could interfere with a student’s ability to pursue higher education.

3. You have a point
Posting about problems and problem Republicans is easy. What changes need to be made and a well thought out plan with a lot of foresight and consideration for the long term to implement those changes is another story. It's not enough to bitch.

I'll never volunteer to be a mod. These 50 or so "Rush said today..." "Ann Coulter is nuts", "O'Reilly is a liar" posts every day would be kicked over to the conservatives forum until the morans who post them were trained to do it themselves.

Edit: Oh, yeah, and then 10 tweety posts every day.

45. I've had to put 5-6 DUers on my ignore list,
just because they post GOP taking point every day. Everything that comes out of the mouth of Rush, Tweety, O'Reilly, Hannity, Coulter, Leslie, Hume, Norah, and all the rest of Bush's media minions gets posted here. My question is, why do these people visit and post at a site called Democratic Underground when then spend their days listening to Repubs?

16. Hmmm... far as "favorite" Democrat...
I'd have to think about that one before I narrowed a list down..

Definitely General Clark, Russ Feingold, Janet Napolitano, Paul Hackett, Charlie Rangel, Joe Wilson, Tom Harkin, John Kerry, Jennifer Granholm, and about 50,000 others would be right near the top somewhere.

20. this morning I awoke to a news story that left me in tears..
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 04:29 PM by flaminbats
I will never forget the speech Christopher Reeve made at our convention in 1996. But I only learned recently that he had died, what I didn't know was that Dana Reeve discovered that she had lung cancer shortly afterward. Today I woke up to a news story reporting that she is gone as well.

The Reeves were plagued with bad luck, but they turned this into something positive. Reeve used his name recognition, wealth, and medical condition to help others with paralysis. Dana Reeve continued this effort..even as she suffered with cancer after Christopher had died. Being great isn't about making money, being lucky, and attacking those who already have problems. Being great is learning from our mistakes, turning our weaknesses into strengths, and sacrificing for others who currently just suffer with hope.

Christopher and Dana Reeve represent everything that is good about liberalism and our party, and everything those in power could accomplish if they cared. To me they are both defining examples of being Christian.

in case anybody hadn't guessed, lol!

I'm kind of inherently biased because he's a fellow veterinarian. But I like his stands on everything. Too bad I can't vote for him - I'm in CA. But I can keep asking everybody to show your support. We want him to go to DC and show those folks how a true gentleman behaves. And how a true Christian treats his fellow man.
