"One night a week, let's kill the immigrants" .... WTF????
I caught the tail end of this on Countdown. Olberman says some RW radio yakker called for us to kill all the immigrants one night a week?

That MUST be a crime. I can't believe this kind of shit makes it on the air.

My God ... daily I weep for the country I was born in. I sure miss America.

Outrage overload, indeed.

Dear God, please return us to sanity and civility. Please let my fellow man regain his senses.

1. Ignorant xenophobes
blame the immigrants rather than the corporations. It's the companies employing cheap labor, that drives wages down and hurts EVERYONE. Start sending the CEO's to prison for 10-20 year stretches for employing illegals. Get the entire Walton family, and people who hire illegals to clean downtown skyscrapers. THAT will send a message!!!

21. It's everyone's fault. It's wrong to just blame the corporations.
Everyone who hires an illegal alien as a nanny, cook, ironing lady, garden man, is at fault. Who really keeps track if they're paying minimum wage? And where would an illegal alien go to complain if he or she is being cheated out of wages from Joe Blow or Jane Doe? You really think that every U.S. citizen who hires one to mow their lawn is paying fair wages? Get real.

24. And the child entrepreneur
who goes out and mows lawns for neighbors?

The child who helps their mother participate in a bake-sale?

The two friends who set up a lemonade stand and split the profits?

The man who pays his friend with beer for helping with yard-work?

At what point do any of these check the credentials/fair-wage earnings? Where does this ethereal blame end?

Large corporations and multiple abusers should suffer, not Joe Citizen. However much "Sally down the street" pays the gardener, does not affect the wage-earnings of everyone else. As the largest employer in the U.S. Wal-Mart sets the standard, rather low, I might add. This has a cascade effect on earnings throughout the competitive market. Libertarians and the like, want us to put our trust in "the market." The market has betrayed the average citizen, competing for lowest wages and highest productivity. Turning us into a consumer nation that cannot afford much else. As health care and retirement become things of the past, what do those shiny knick-knacks buy you?

I know immigrants who use the "Mexican retirement plan." It goes as such:

1) Earn in one week what you would earn in a good month in Mexico.
2) Save and send as much of that money home as you can.
3) Buy land and build a house for yourself and your family in Mexico. (most large purchases are paid in full, no payment plans)
4) Own everything and build yourself a nice little nest egg.

These are people who are trying their best to provide for their own, can you blame them?

So maybe I'm the asshole because I want to blame the corporate executives who have no shame in hiring illegals, who skirt the social security number/name verification, who are making record profits year after year, while reducing the strength of Unions, and reducing worker's rights!!!

All because I don't consider "Sally down the street" JUST as guilty, is THAT REAL enough for you?!?!

26. It's a non sequitur.
If you impose an immigration policy then it applies to EVERYONE. If an American hires an illegal alien he breaks the IMMIGRATION LAW. As for American kids and other American laborers, city laws and state ordinances apply. Kids are allowed to make a certain amount of money without it infringing on the laws. So if you're pushing an Immigration law on the corporations, then you need to apply it to yourself as well.

I don't know how to express this, but if you add up all the American Joe Liberals in this country who feel the way you do, and who are hiring illegals, they far exceed the number hired by corporations. So if you really want to put a dent into this problem, look in the mirror, because it starts with you. Otherwise, you don't really want to take care of the illegal immigration problems in this country, you just want to punish the corporations. Not really a stretch, is it?

It's not about discouraging immigrants from illegally crossing the border for you, is it? And I'm fine with your stance if you recognize that and make sure that others understand it as well. You aren't really concerned about the illegal immigration issue, you just love to use this opportunity to bash corporations. Confession is good for the soul.

7. No doubt...
It is scary. It seems like the perfect storm is brewing - immigration, sorry jobs picture, high gas prices, potential war in Iran, anti-Arab xenophobia, Gay rights - to bring the crazies out. And sooner or later - I hate to say it - they're going to turn violent.

15. you say you want a revolution?
It may certainly come to that. I know I'm sure getting tired of the elite sitting up there pigging out on all the goodies making our lives suckier.

I make what used to be an amazing salary - $50k/year - and husband makes slightly less. We have two children in community college and hang on by the skin of our teeth. Meanwhile upper management live like pseudo kings in way-too-big houses that cover former farmland, and the CEOs enjoy a 22% pay increase, and at work they tell me we are now an International Organization which really sounds worrisome in this age of sending jobs to India or Brazil.

so yeah, they could turn violent. I really hope some of us find a way to step up and do what we can to keep the revolution PEACEFUL. Sit-ins worked pretty well in the '60's and they can be fun ;)

The xenophobia has gone off the scale in the last month or so. And what worries me is that the nut-jobs are feeling emboldened to come out of the woodwork and spew their hate.

Hang on! :)

4. We miss the illusion we assumed was our country...
that racist, biggoted hate speech (chiefly fomented by Lou Dobbs) is an expression (spoken out loud) of the hatred, and bigotry we have always had tracing back to our european ancenstory.

that's how massacres of the natives were able to be pulled off, that's how we allowed slavery for centuries, and then after the civil war, there was at least a full century of out in the open road side lyinchings of blacks in the south before the civil rights movement took hold...

but the hatred and the bigotry on that level has not gone away.

Remember that it was Former Imperial Wizard Klansman David Duke who was first on the scene raising this issue on "illegal immigrants" back in the early 80's holding vigilantism on the borders and organizing vigilanti militias parties carry out their idea of justice.

now it's about to be made legal.

13. The America in which i grew up was a cross between .....
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 07:45 PM by Husb2Sparkly
..... Happy Days and Julia Gets Her Groove On.

I grew up in a decidedly tolerant area with decidedly tolerant (albeit under-educated and blue collar) parents. I'm white. My first girlfriend was black. My best friend for a time was gay. I was, for all that and so much more ...... normal and average. Race was a non-issue. Bigotry simply didn't exist in my childhood world. All this was **before** the 1964 Civil Rights Act. All this was **before** Martin spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

That's the America I grew up in.

And today, here I sit.

Weeping for what once was and is no more.

And I am so very pleased and proud to say my children are like me. In them I see hope for the future.

edit to add .... I am also fully aware of what was, at that time, going on in other parts of America. But my personal experience was not reflective of that.

17. same here, despite geographics ...
You and I grew about the same time, i was born and raised pretty much in the south but in a cross racial home and because Dad was in the Military, i also experienced other cultrual and geographical sectors of this country, like Hawaii while in high school and a southern california for a couple of years earlier .. exposure to other cultures while very young makes a huge difference. exposure to racism, hatred and bigotry pretty much cements that into the thinking of incredibly far too many in our country still.

and i share your feelings of despair and grief... we can be so much better as a nation than what is being cultivated now.

Immigrants were stealing thier jobs and hurting their economy and their culture... it just escalated from there. and it appears, we haven't learned much from that history.

what's it going to for us whities to join our sisters and brothers in the streets ? We have another opportunity, we can join them in solidarity come May 1st. Let's just do it!

23. "Illegals": the new Jews
For all this time, I thought it was the Muslims. It's the Hispanics who are being chosen as the new scapegoats, since most immigrants who came here illegally are Spanish-speaking.

These genocidal racist rethugs are preparing for their "final solution": the systematic murder of persons of Spanish and/or South Asian origin.

14. jack cafferty himself was flaming the passions of hate against immigrants
earlier ... he was not as explicit as the RW radio talker quoted by Olberman since he was not directly inciting anyone to kill anyone, but he may have been more dangerous in that he said the illegal immigrants were using freedom speech, a right granted only to american citizens, and americans could not use their transportation paid by american taxes since the protesters were out on the streets, and he kept on saying lots of things like that ... (as he was saying all of what he was saying, i was hoping and praying that there was not a nut case listening to cafferty because all the inflammatory spillage cafferty allowed himself to spew out, could have grave consequences for the people protesting out in the streets.

20. It happened on a Phoenix, AZ righty radio station
"In a related matter, Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and U.S. Attorney Paul Charlton sent a letter to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin on Friday to call his attention to remarks made by KFYI (550 AM) radio host Brian James last month.

According to a transcript of the broadcast, during one segment of his show, James suggested a solution to the immigration problem was to randomly pick one night a week to "kill anyone coming across the border."

"This type of threatening and inciting speech is dangerous and totally irresponsible for anyone, particularly a licensed body using the public airways," Goddard and Charlton wrote in their letter. "We are deeply concerned that, given the intensifying conflict over immigration in Arizona, this speech may lead to violence."

KFYI executives could not be reached for comment."

22. The lunatic fringe is comprised of lunatics,
but some Americans are resentful of being "culturally overwhelmed." I think Mona Charon, while a right wing lapdog, offers some insight into what is inflaming many of our countrymen/women.

"Most galling to many Americans (both native born and naturalized) is the attitude of entitlement displayed by the illegals who thronged the streets in recent weeks. To stage a demonstration demanding anything when you are not in the country legally is an act of supreme chutzpah. And why not? When immigrants arrive, they find school systems bending over backward to offer bilingual education, Mexican pride festivals and Spanish language options at the bank, supermarket and post office.

The fashion of multiculturalism has sparked exactly the opposite of what its propounders intended. Hostility to foreigners has increased because Americans have declining confidence that immigrants want to or can assimilate into the larger society."

http://www.dailybreeze.com/opinion/articles/2605521.html

This movement of people is for economic gain, not because of political persecution. They do not hunger for our democratic liberties. The ultimate answer is for global prosperity to take root, but the exodus from Mexico/Central America will not bring this about. What is in the short term interest does not serve the long term goal of those who yearn to prosper in their own communities in their nations of birth.

We need an immigration policy which is fair to all, including those who are american born. Foreign governments need to invest their dollars in seeding their own economies instead of their military. The people of those nations must demand change for change to occur; for certain that will not happen if instead their people are busy pursuing economic relief beyond their national borders.

I expect my thoughts will enrage some, but I believe that the long term interest overrides the expediency of "quick cash."

It is not my wish to cause animosity; my desire is to look for an answer which fulfills everyones desire for a better quality of life.

25. "The fashion of multiculturalism"
If Charon is a "right wing lapdog"--why are you using her as an authority?

And what's wrong with "Mexican Pride"? US born Mexican-Americans feel that, as well as legal immigrants. And many of us in border states are not "frightened" by non-Anglo Saxon cultures. They have been here a long time & have helped contributed to Texas culture--that is, many of the good parts of our culture.

And we keep getting immigrants from all over the world in Houston. I realize that some stagnant, inbred backwaters are different.

because it expresses what many of our countrymen/women are feeling whether you or I like it or not. Don't be mislead into thinking it's only the provincials who feel this way, talk to some big city moderates and independents.
