5. Those disapprovals are HUGE
but with so many disapproving of everything he does, how does he still get more support?

49% approve of him
but 46 was the highest of any specific area.

19. Rather counter intuitive, isn't it?
He's losing on every major metric, but people still like him. Power of the media who can make Bush look like a great guy, but paint Bill Clinton as evil. An example, CNN releasing an unscientific poll that says people believe Bush is more pariotic than Kerry (38% to 34%). Is that reality?

6. What do you think is causing Bush's numbers to slip?
Despite all the recent revelations about WMD's and going AWOL and so on, I don't see where there have been any major catastrophic bombshells for him. I need no convincing that the Bush presidency has been an unmitigated disaster, but what has happened recently that the rest of the people are starting to catch on all of a sudden? Don't they want to go to Mars?

11. I was wondering about that, too
Perhaps the primaries have opened a Pandora's box for Bush. Now people feel it's OK to express dissatisfaction with him, whereas before they were maybe a bit reluctant out of fear of being called unpatriotic. Just a theory.

13. It's the lack of WMD, and O'Niell (and the bland SOTU address).
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 06:20 PM by Brotherjohn
Yes, WE HERE all have known since before the war that Iraq likely didn't have WMDs. But WE READ nearly everything on the subject. The general public does not.

When David Kay came out and SAID that there were and probably had never been (since the early 90s) any Iraqi WMDs, that shocked a lot of Americans. Most of them merely read the headlines, and while they may have heard a blurb or two about someone taking issue with Bush's claims, they generally believed their president and placed their trust in him. They even backed a war because of it.

Now, for the first time, they are REALLY hearing that they were wrong in placing their trust in Bush, and that they were wrong in backing this war.

Although we have been asking for some time "If there were no WMDs, then why did we go to war?", the general public is just starting to ask that question. Combine this with now over 500 American deaths (and counting), and Bush is in real trouble.

Until recently, Bush has been able to keep his head above water... i.e. approval ratings at or above 50% in all polls, except Zogby, which tends to rate him lowest. He had levelled off in the mid-50s for a while. This poll, however, marks the third consecutive national poll to rate him below 50% (Newsweek, Quinnipiac, Gallup), along with Zogby (http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm).

He is in real trouble.

14. The SOTU speech
Perhaps the worst speech in 20 years. Asked for money for immigrants, for felons, taunted the Dems like a bully. And I thought the Dems (Kennedy and Hillary) made a great showing with their "doomsday" looks and shaking of heads. Even the military guys (Remember the black guy in uniform who yawned and barely clapped?) were not into that speech.

Huge budget.
IRaq casualties.
AWOL.
Smirking Chimp.

He's going down, bank on it.

21. Right. Plus, the continued pounding from the left
The lack of WMDs, continued American casualties, jobless "recovery," Cheney, crappy health care plan, PLUS the SOTU.

Add that to the fact that according to the poll nearly 60% are now paying close attention to the race and they hear pounding from the Democrats on Bush's record, and people are starting to lose faith in Bush.

That said, the realists are right -- these numbers won't last, and Bush will lead for some time, but these #'s give hope. The downward trend in his ratings is significant and if this holds up for awhile it'll really help the nominee.

November could go either way, but I really think '04 could break the 50-50 stalemate our way. It won't be overwhelming, but beating Bush by 5% or so is a realistic outcome.

9. Early days yet.
It could get even better. The fact that it's even that close after what has happened during the last 3 years is a disgrace for America.

I'm still taking those polls with a large grain of salt. A smart Rove tactic for now would be to lull the Dems into a false sense of complacency right now. Just keep remembering who CNN really works for.

I have something in common with Edwards--my voice sounds terrible (from my stupid co-worker passing around her throat bug!) wow this is VERY encouraging news for both Kerry and Edwards :bounce: I know neither has said so on the record (I think) but a Kerry/Edwards ticket sounds really good.
