2. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
They will eventually over-reach, and their fall will be a sight to see...

3. Seems to me they have been overreaching since 9-11,
and getting away with it. I'm ready for someone to put a stop to this, before it becomes unstoppable.

5. History lessons
Go back to 5th century Athens, whose generals overreached in the Pelopponesian War and lost not only their empire but also their democracy to Sparta, a totalitarian state.

George the 3rd and his folly with the American revolutionaries andthis, when the British Empire was emerging as a strong world power.

Napoleon Bonaparte and his disastrous military campaign into Russia. If you look at a map of Europe during his time he had all of Europe except Britain and Russia. His army died on the long march out of Moscow in freezing snow. He was then defeated by the British.

Everyone should read Barbara Tuchman's "March of Folly." In it, she discusses just such overreaching and includes Vietnam (it was written during that era and she is now deceased).

READ HISTORY!

8. are the Democrats immune?
This is what kills me about how Democrats have behaved. Democrats are equal partners with the Republicans when it comes to entrenched and insulated, thus absolute, power. Pretending like everything will be just fine if Democrats win control of Congress in '06 or the White House in '08 is naive, narrow minded, or hypocritical.

If we aren't going to examine the how and why this country got to this state with some non-partisan perspective then nothing will really change. In fact, given that of the two entrenched powers, the Republicans are and will continue to be the dominant one (because they are the party that frames the debate which steers the course of the country), a brief interlude out of the spotlight may be exactly what the fascist/fundamentalist faction of the Republican Party needs. They'll merely regroup; and in a term or two when Americans again tire of direction-less Democratic leadership, they will reemerge with a clean slate and pick up right where they left off.

10. How long have you been paying attention?
this country has always had problems, but the last six years have been monumental. This congress and admin have brought this country to the edge of collapse, and it's a Republican majority.

12. LBJ..
... was a great a liberal as there ever was and accomplished a great deal, but he deserves the lions share of the blame for Vietnam. No party is immune, and even in this debacle there was way too much Democratic complicity, and it was all about politics.

11. Their economic war is nearly won, but their avarice is their fall.
If WW3 is an economic restructuring of most of the planet with the ultrarich on top and living like Imelda Marcos upon our labor, it wouldn't be so bad, relatively speaking. The contempt the ultrarich have for the rest of us and their ego and pride in manifesting it will be their downfall. However, much damage can be done in the process.
