So, what if a country offered US corporations free, slave labor?
Edited on Tue Mar-28-06 07:00 AM by Montauk6
How would the out-sorcerers and laissez-fairies like Walter Williams* try to sell this one?

- Why should manufacturers continue to be burdened by paying for something they can get for free?

- We're in a global economy, so American workers really need to get over this outdated nonsense that they should be compensated for their efforts.

- Sure, it's slavery but, hey, they're provided with food, clothing and steady work which gives them a reason for living; otherwise, they'd probably starve to death.

- Slavery is a deceptive term; these people choose to work for free. You don't see any revolts, do you?

* I only single Williams out because he's the first economist (sic) to come to mind when it comes to defending the outsourcing trend.

1. The sell torture now so slavery would not be a problem for most
of the reich wing monsters in charge of our country and companies.

The only people they would have to sell it to would be the stock holders. Those of us who will be outsourced to slave labor will not have a say in the matter. I have no doubt that we will become the worlds poor.

2. Now, there's an easy sell!
Shareholders, for the most part, stay seated most of the time. All in the name of a good quarter.

3. China already does
One manufacturer I know pays 26 cents per hour for ten hour days and six day work weeks. No benefits.

That's free slave labor

5. What does that manufacturer make? I think that we should be boycotting ALL
slave labor shops.

7. I'm thinking that NK will be the next frontier.
Corporations could simply give the workers a cot next to whatever machine they are operating and provide a couple of meals (could they get away with just one?) per day.

4. "American workers really need to get over this outdated nonsense ..."
. . . that they should be compensated for their efforts."

Yeah, and American corporations, in turn, should start getting over the equally outdated nonsense that the worker should have to PAY for their products.

Offshoring is irresponsible Reaganite bullshit. No strong middle class, no strong economy, no matter how many Bushills like that fatass Neil Cavuto try to spin it.

8. Yeah, Hugh, WONDERFUL point!
Why is only the corporations that get to pass on rising costs to their customers? Why can't workers get an automatic raise in pay to mirror the rise in, say, gas prices? Or the price of food and clothing?

9. Yeah, actually I've been aware of this cockeyed phenom...
and, don't know about you, but it creeps me out, the idea that the CS rep I'm discussing my credit card account with over the phone might be some trustee in Terre Haute!

10. Cowboys or Indians - take your pick
The idea has been transplanted to the UK so now I try to boycott the stores making big bucks of prison labour. Crazy that the one thing that could keep ex-cons out of prison is a job but the only opportunity they get for work is in prison !!!

11. Your post would be funny ...
if it weren't so exactly what they would say. It's scary, but I can totally see some "economist" spewing those exact phrases.

12. Yes, we're encroaching on a full realization of Orwell's
1984. The Multi-National Corporations are working together to care for all of us ... care for all of our needs. I love Big Brother. :scared:
