People, can we all agree that we can wait to deal with illegal
immigration until after we have dealt with our illegal government and its illegal War? Rove planned this all a long time ago, illegal immigration is to be the gay marriage of the 2006 election cycle. It's a fucking wedge issue, pure and simple. Three (3) count'em, employers were fined last year for hiring illegals. Doesn't that tell you something? If the Repukes gave a flying fuck they'd be all over their corporate buddies' asses prosecuting violations.

1. I think its another red herring.
Instead of flag-burning or dead co-eds, they've gone back to scape-goating minorities a-la prop 187 and 209 in California about 10 years ago. Its just something else to divide the electorate, especially during the elections.

2. YOU ARE EXACTLY RIGHT!
It's sad to see so many DUers buy right into this Repug wedge issue. If they manipulate so many of us so easily, no wonder we can't win a majority.

3. I would have to agree, but it's hard to get wild eyed emotional folk to
realize it. There are a lot of people, on each side of the fence, seriously worked up about this one.

I don't think open borders is a solution, but I find there a hundred more serious issues.

4. Wasn't one of those employers Wal-Mart?
And now Wal-Mart has a deal that they get 48 hours notice before INS is allowed to give them a "surprise" inspection.

5. You are right, but it is a huge problem that is hurting more than helping
the working poor.

10. except of course that there is little evidence
that it hurts the working poor. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of non-dubious hard evidence of the great harm that illegals do. Everyone seems to just accept that this is agreat evil. I rather doubt it is. Instead I have this massive suspicion that mostly this is just rightwing fear mongers mining another fear vein.

6. I agree.
"It's a fucking wedge issue, pure and simple" and half of DU is lining up to push the wedge deeper.

7. Lining up hell, I'm about to grab this "wedge" and shove it!
This wedge will become a stake for the whole damn vampire party.

9. Actually, it need not be treated as a wedge issue.
I've heard both parites accused of hypocrisy on this issue, often-Republicans want to ignore illegal immigration for cheap labor-Democrats want to ignore it for their votes. A legitimate way to start with the issue to to say "If it's such a big problem, let's see enforcement of the laws already on the books. Bunch of I-9 audits at huge employers." And since, as Bay Whaterface, Republican strategist, explained on CBS this morning "it is in no way a racial issue" I think I can support building huge fences on the soouthern border, if they'll commit to building a mile of fence on the northern border for every mile of fence they build on the southern border.

There is nothing they can propose about illegal immigration that cannot be thrown back at them.
