Edwards Criticizes Kerry Over Donations

Democratic presidential contender John Edwards (news - web sites), in a must-win battle for South Carolina, criticized chief rival John Kerry (news - web sites) on Monday for accepting contributions from lobbyists and supporting trade pacts that he contends have cost U.S. jobs.

Edwards, who had gained support in Iowa and New Hampshire for running a positive campaign, told reporters, "I don't take contributions from lobbyists, and he obviously does."

Adding to his criticism of Kerry's ties with lobbyists, Edwards told reporters after a speech at the College of Charleston that Kerry had voted for the North American Free Trade Agreement and other trade pacts that had helped cost Americans their jobs. Edwards was not in the Senate when NAFTA passed, but he has said he would have voted against it.

"Senator Kerry and I have very different positions on the issue of trade," said Edwards, who has been critical of Kerry as a Washington insider and four-term senator. "If we want real change in Washington, we need someone who hasn't been there for 15-20 years."

1. Yeah, Edwards would have voted against NAFTA
A) had he been in the senate and
B) had he bothered to show up that day.

2. heheheheh
seems to be a lot of 'not showing up' amongst the senators who want to be president... maybe they want the job so they can emulate W and spend 1/3 of their time chopping cedar.

5. Granted, the difference between Edwards and the others
The others were in the senate more than a couple of years before deciding to seek a new job.

That's one good thing about a president Edwards: He's not likely to seek a new job two years into his term.

10. Ohmigosh!
Now waiting for everyone who has been praising Edwards for running such a clean campaign to start railing on him for trying to bring down the party. <sarcasm off>

11. What he won't do
is utter the name Johnny Chung. Attacks on Kerry personally are fine, Johnny Chung was just dead wrong.
