NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Endorses John Kerry
“As President, Kerry will Fight for Every American Against Special Interests”

February  02,  2004

For Immediate Release
Albuquerque, NM –

New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer traveled today to New Mexico to announce his support for John Kerry at a rally in Albuquerque.  Since becoming Attorney General in 1999, Spitzer has worked to make New York a national leader in investor protection, environmental stewardship, labor rights, personal privacy, public safety and criminal law enforcement.

"With his long record of standing up for all Americans against special interests, John Kerry is the best candidate for President,” said Attorney General Spitzer. “He and I have fought together against the violation of clean air laws and to resolve the mutual fund scandal and other corporate wrongdoings. I know that he will help small investors and consumers. John Kerry has a real plan to end the era of special interests and I am convinced he is the man to take back the White House from President Bush and his corporate allies.”

“I am proud to have Eliot Spitzer's support in my campaign.” said John Kerry. “He's been leading the fight for investor and consumer fairness for years in New York. His work has set the standards for the rest of the country. America's small investors and consumers want fairness; an economy where they can succeed and build a better life; a country that rewards what's right; a government that is on their side.  That's what I'm fighting for.”

21. Kerry behind * & Dean in healthcare,commuunications&electronics donations

Kerry behind Dean in health care & communications & electronics donations

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0130-02.htm

This election cycle, Kerry took $531,251 from the health care industry, putting him among the top four recipients of such money – just behind President Bush and Democratic presidential contenders Howard Dean of Vermont and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

He was among the top three recipients – behind Bush and Dean – in the $883,950 he took from the communications and electronics industry.

It is silly for Dean to try this tactic when he can so easily be called on it.

6. this is one of the few endorsements that means something...
I believe Spitzer is one of the few honest people committed to destroying corporate corruption. I must admit, Kerry's claims seemed empty, what with the report showing Kerry was the Senator to receive the most money from "special interests" in the past 15 years. But if Spitzer is backing him, Kerry has some credibility with me when it comes to railing against special interests. Kerry is still my 4th or 5th choice for the nomination... but this is good news for Kerry, IMO.

12. Boy, the atmosphere on this thread is positively rightous!
Can you see how weak your arguments about John Kerry and corruption are in the face of this endorsement? The day of the bogus Chung rehash? Trumped!

Water's deep, but we push on!

22. Prove it with FACTS, not trumped up numbers, slinkerwink.

For a change.

You sure as heck won't post Dean's numbers over his career using the same formula used against Kerry, will you?

An HONEST politician who was TRULY outraged would put up his numbers using the same formula and be HONEST with his audiences and supporters when comparing them.

But that will never happen because Dean is a liar and a deceiver who uses his supporters to spread disinformation while keeping his own records sealed and his own numbers quiet.

9. Unfortunately, Spitzer is the bet we've got.
Just try to name another state's AG....

He had busted some corporate crime, though the sentences/fines have been very lenient.

10. Fluff! From New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer?
Edited on Mon Feb-02-04 12:05 PM by bigtree
Ha! Trump and double Trump to those who would impune the character of John Kerry!

Eliot Spitzer:

Eliot Spitzer became the state’s 63rd Attorney General on January 1, 1999. Since that time, he has advanced initiatives to make New York a national leader in investor protection, environmental stewardship, labor rights, personal privacy, public safety and criminal law enforcement.

Spitzer’s investigations of conflicts of interest on Wall Street have been the catalyst for dramatic reform in the nation’s financial services industry.

His lawsuits against Midwest and Mid-Atlantic power plants will help reduce air pollution responsible for acid rain and smog in the Northeast.

His efforts to curtail abuses in the green grocery industry have been hailed as landmark labor rights cases.

His investigations of internet companies and direct marketers have resulted in new privacy protections for consumers throughout the nation.

His "code of conduct" was the foundation for a settlement that reformed the way the nation’s largest gun manufacturer designs and distributes handguns.

His prosecutions of sophisticated white collar crimes have resulted in some of the nation’s largest fraud recoveries.

Through these and other initiatives, Spitzer is building the reputation of the Attorney General as "the People’s Lawyer."

Spitzer brings considerable experience to the office. He was a clerk to United State District Court Judge Robert W. Sweet and, later, an associate at Paul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison.

He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan from 1986-1992, rising to become Chief of the Labor Racketeering Unit, where he successfully prosecuted organized crime and political corruption cases. He also worked at the New York law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, and was a partner at Constantine & Partners.

Spitzer has contributed great time and energy to community service, serving on the boards of various not-for-profit organizations.

Spitzer is a 1981 graduate of Princeton University and a 1984 graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. Spitzer and his wife, Silda, also a Harvard Law School graduate, live in Manhattan with their three daughters, and also maintain a home in Columbia County.

11. That's because Spitzer can distinguish between a guy that gets
a donation from a character that turns out to be shady and returns it versus a guy who CLAIMS he's for the little guy then locks the little guy and his environmentalist friends out of talks concerning development.

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry gives a double thumbs up as New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer endorses him during a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 2, 2004. With polls showing Kerry well positioned to score big in the seven-state showdown, he was increasingly buoyed as he moved to wind up a six-day, non-stop swing through the voting states of Missouri, South Carolina, Arizona, Delaware, New Mexico, Oklahoma and North Dakota. 16. Looks like Spitzer's poised to do some serious campaigning too...
Spitzer aides said the endorsement deal came together Sunday and that the Kerry camp wanted the attorney general on the campaign trail with the senator as quickly as possible. That led to a hastily arranged flight to New Mexico so the two could appear together there first thing Monday morning.
