Need input - how to write to elected officials.
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 10:15 AM by brazenlyliberal
Last night, my nephew told me he wanted help writing a letter to his senators about the war.

I was sooooo happy to hear he was ready to be activist (he's 10) and so happy he cared enough to want to do it right.

He and I worked out a format for his letter and it occured to me it might be useful for other people, too. I'd appreciate any input before it goes live. I'll post the finished product here, too, if anyone thinks it might be useful.

1. Maybe
Be very short, very polite, to the point, to the point, to the point. Did I mention to the point? I'd start with a four line limit and go from there. Then edit with the goal of shortening. No flowery language. Easy to read. Just a hint of butt kissing. Clearly identify yourself (age, status, voting status, citizenry.)

I could not open your letter. Good luck to you and your nephew. Good for him for wanting to do this.

3. I took your advice
You inspired me to email my senators in regards to the censure resolution. I found your tips, especially on subject line, to be very helpful-and I used BossHog's suggestion of keeping it short.

One thing you may wish to know: some senators don't have email forms that allow a subject line. One of my senators only allows you to choose from a list of topics. I would suggest that if others find this to be the case, that they make their subject line the first sentence of the email.

4. Oooh, you're right!
I forgot to take into account that some people write via contact forms. Good reminder! I'll edit that in. Thanks!
