Roy Neel tired of being called "the ultimate Washington insider"
By the way, I'm tired of being called a "the ultimate Washington insider" by Russert, Tom Brokaw, and all the other media guys. I'm not even sure what that term means! And like Gov. Dean said today, I haven't done that kind of work in years. I've been teaching a course on Presidential Leadership at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and writing and lecturing. But if any of my Washington experience helps this campaign be successful, then great!

1. What should we call him?
"Mightiest of Mortals"

"The Ultimate Grapefruit Hurler"

"The Ultimate Donation Reciever?"

"The Ultimate Speedy Gonzolez Imitator?"

"The Ultimate Small Town College Professer?"

3. Gore's endorsement was the beginning of the end for Dean
I'll pivot the rise and slide on that day.

4. Why do you think it backfired?
At the time it seemed like a big break for the campaign although it hasn't turned out that way.

5. It "mainstreamed" Dean
He was suddenly both insider and outsider. Much has been made of the fact that all the endorsements were clouding the image and message Dean was trying to project.

Also, Gore's timing was horrible. It really made me disrespect Gore, although up to that point I more or less liked him.

6. Again, Why?
Do you think he did this maliciously (as In "I'll screw Dean so that I can run in 2008?") Or just a screw up?

I probably liked the move for teh same reason you disliked it. I don't want a Democrat in power who has no power; the President will be an insider whether he likes it or not, and that endorsement to me showed that Dean could work with the Congress to get stuff done (well show might be to strong a word--seemed to indicate might be better).

8. I am happy Gore endorsed Dean when he did.

Note, that it seemed to me that right after his endorsement big media went all out negative on Dean. Maybe because Gore's endorsement got the upper management worrying about Bush's political future in Dean's ability to fight.

9. Gore was genuinely trying to help. Not malicious.
But as someone wrote here the timing showed his notorious political "tin ear". If he had done it much earlier or later that would have been different, but he chose right before the beginning of the primaries, when Dean's polls and momentum were as high as could be imagined. It seemed mere bandwagon jumping.

In retrospect, I wonder if it would have been better for Gore to wait until Dean really seemed to need a boost. Apparently that is why Harkin endorsed when he did, Dean really was beginning to slip in the polls and they sought a boost.
