Kerry leads Dems, Bush in Quinnipiac Poll
Associated Press

February 2, 2004

HARTFORD, Conn. -- John Kerry leads the race for the Democratic presidential nomination with the support 42 percent of Democrats, according to a national poll released Monday.

The Quinnipiac University poll also gave the Massachusetts Senator the edge, 51 percent to 42 percent, in a head-to-head race with President Bush.

In the race for the nomination, Kerry held a substantial lead over Howard Dean, who received the support of 11 percent of those Democrats surveyed. John Edwards and Wesley Clark each received 10 percent, followed by Joe Lieberman with 6 percent.

The poll also gave Bush an approval rating of between 45 and 48 percent, the first time his approval has dipped below 50 percent in a Quinnipiac poll.

2. Chip off the old block
This is exactly where Bush was heading prior to 9/11, which really saved his popularity. It just goes to show how timing is everything. Had 9/11 happened in 2003, the same old goofus, with the same dumb policies would have ridden the wave of fear back into the White House. The general population isn't predominately conservative, but liberal on an issue-by-issue basis. W just makes it so clear how the little issues add up to bad policy.

We have an excellent chance, in a fair election, that is. I wonder if we'll be allowed one?

3. Wow
51-42 over bush and 42-11 over Dean, his next closest competitor. I'm sure this next round of voters will bump Edwards and/or Clark up some... oh yeah, probably Kerry, too.

4. This proves that Kerry cannot win!!!!!!
I'm not sure how, but that is my story and I'm sticking to it.....

I'm kidding of course, but the whole Kerry can't win meme is just as outlandish as the Dean can't win or Clark can't win or whatever is the latest round of stupidity being peddled.

Any of our guys has a great shot. But at this point consistently it's showing that Kerry stacks up well against Bush in most polls (I can take or leave polls so I'm not putting 100% stock in this or any of them...but it's still a good barometer).

6. Well said!
All of our candidates are great (except Joe, who seems confused about the definition of Democrat)!

8. Other Dem candidates vs. bush - same poll (good news for most)
The other candidates they asked about are within 2-5 pts of bush, dramatically improved from Jan 26.

---------
http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x9998.xml

In possible 2004 presidential matchups, Kerry beats Bush 51 – 43 percent, compared to a 49 – 45 percent Bush lead January 26. Bush beats all other Democrats:

49 - 44 percent over Dean, down from 54 – 38 percent January 26;
47 – 45 percent over Edwards, down from 50 – 42 percent;
48 – 45 percent over Clark, down from 51 – 41 percent;
49 – 44 percent over Lieberman, down from 53 – 39 percent.
From January 28 – 31, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,219 registered voters nationwide, with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent. The survey includes 420 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 4.8 percent.
-------

Now why didn't the article include these other matcups vs. bush, one day before a primary? And would it have killed them to ask about DK v bush, AS v bush? Do you see media bias?

10. Since those guys' chance of winning the nomination is remote at best,
They also don't ask how Bush v Larouche did. But none of them will ever be the nominee, so it would be moot.
