Dean asked for Chicago mayor Daley's support
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 11:59 PM by Bleachers7
A top Dem source tells Sneed presidential candidate Howard Dean called Mayor Daley to elicit his support while Hizzoner was attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C., last week. The plea came after the infamous "Dean scream" and after his appearance on the David Letterman show where he tried to make light of the goofy gaffe.

1. Dean should have asked two weeks earlier. Too late now.

2. Why too late?
I believe Daley supports Dean already. At least he's said he's the only Democrat he likes right now.

4. Richard J could probably produce more votes than Richard M.
It's an anachronism.

6. Please, Mr. Mayor, endorse Dean
just for the comedic value, I want to see Dean attack Kerry for being beholden to special interests, with Daley standing on the stage behind him. If there's any Dem in the world I want to take the party back from, it's Daley.

8. I remember reading
when Dean was at the top of the polls that Daley was uncomfortable with him, and thought Dean would not do well against Bush. .

I think Daley will eventually go with Kerry. I'd love for him to go Clark, but I don't think it will happen. Bobby Rush and Daley just don't get along (or at least they didn't when I grew up in Chicago) and this stuff matters in Chicago . . .

9. Odd, because I heard Daley liked Dean
In fact, here ya' go!

Daley says Dean has strong message

Mayor Daley warmed Tuesday to the campaign of Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean, saying the former Vermont governor's "anti-Washington, anti-establishment" message is resonating with Democratic voters.

Daley may be sitting on the sidelines during the 2004 Democratic presidential sweepstakes, but that doesn't mean he isn't paying attention to what Dean is saying.

"He's tapping into this whole anti-Washington, anti-establishment . If you listen to him, he's very clear about that: 'The job has not been done. I can do it better.' That's what he's saying to the American public. . . . If you look at the polls, he is hitting a chord there against the establishment, the Democratic Party and everything else," the mayor said.

The mayor was unequivocal when asked point-blank whether Dean is "tapping into something real" out there.

"It is real. I believe it is real. . . . If you listen to Howard Dean, he's very anti-what has taken place in Washington for far too many years. He symbolizes that, if you go to Washington as a senator or congressman, you cannot run for president. That's a real big symbol. That catches on in the country -- not just with Democrats, but Republicans," Daley said.

Granted that was long before Dean's slide.

10. Daley isn't going to endorse anyone right now
He'll wait until this thing is close to being decided first. It's fine with me. We all know the local party will deliver Illinois to whomever the Democratic nominee is.

11. Well, duh! Of course he called Richie D.
Honey, I live in Chicago. I was born here. I've lived through both Daley administrations and more. Every national Democratic candidate calls da Mare (v. 2.0) and asks for his support at least once a week. It's SOP in the town that still knows how to get out the Dem vote.
