What is the political significance of today's events ?
With the Dubai port deal falling thru? Who lost the most? Who won the most? Are the repercussions of this deal now over or will they continue up to the election? Can the Democrats now make a rational argument that this White House and the Repubs cannot be trusted with our national security? If they would sell our ports, what else would they sell?

1. Dumbya lost big
This has exposed how weak his support in his own party is. It's made him look weak overseas.

Weak, weak, WEAK. BIIIIIIG loser ...

Now can the Dems capitalize on this? That's another story.

6. I think us Dems lost on this one.
Bush is not running for reelection but the Repubs that are running again and appeared to stand up to him are the winners.

8. But the image of a party fighting with its "leader" isn't good
Especially during an election year. It makes them look divided (and perhaps gives us an advantage).

4. exactly - repukes got to show they stand up to prez on ports deal
they get to look "tough" and get a little distance between themselves and bush/cheney's lousy poll numbers also.

Works well for their re-election bids.

7. One step forward, two steps back.
Maybe a Bushco plan was stopped in its tracks. But has this strengthened the GOP legislators for standing up to Bushco? And more importantly what will become of the larger issue, port security? We did not have port security before, and stopping DPW will not change that fact.

10. We'll have to see who actually ends up with the contract
You know this will be watched. If it is Halliburton, or a subsidiary thereof, it could still spell trouble for them. If it is a shell company, and their true ties back to DPW are revealed, the blowback could be huge.

Even the wee cowboy knows that "Fool me once....unhhhh, hmmmm, shame on you............fool me twice....ummmm, unhhhhhh.....er, won't git fooled agin!!!"

9. Republican corporatists are in a pickle
Because this episode has raised latent populist opposition to foreign ownership of assets to a frenzied pitch, to which can be added outsourcing and all the other pretty toys the globalists have been swishing through without much of a peep from the public.

Politicians now know that this potent brew of animosity toward globalism (in part) can be used to get votes....and it bodes poorly for corporatists interests. Their former alignment with the social issue republicans may be coming to an end. That potent alliance, we can all hope, may be in tatters, which could really help dems in 2006, if they don't insist on blowing it again by their usual baleful stares into the headlights of current events

13. Usually the Party that agrees with 80% of the American people...
is considered the "winner"....But, for some reason, we can't accept that. For once, the Democrats kicked the Republicans asses! They were called on their arrogance.

15. The answer isn't evident as of today.
We need to know and demand certain things and the way Republicans agree or fight it will reveal plenty.

We need to know what this Administration is going to do to prevent 'underlings' in four Cabints from making a decision such as this for that is what they claim - that the top guys in Homeland Sec, Treasury, DOD, and State didn't know anything and George said he didn't know anything. Are Dems going to allow this?

We need to know if Dubai will own it and to whom they will lease it out or if they are out completely. It is all fuzzy. What they come up with will undoubtedly benefit a certain few monetarily.

We need to show that Democrats can be just as 'patriotic' as Republicans so that there entire campaign to show us as disloyal goes away forever.

Any Dem candidates must use the port to expose the WH.

16. One thing is for certain...
The American people cannot trust this Adminsitration to make decisions that are in the best interest of this nation. With those 4 Dept heads plus the President and VP behind the deal, it should be obvious to everyone just how out of touch they really are...
