My congressman votes AGAINST blocking ports deal
Jim Moran, D-VA. :wtf: Has he lost his mind? He's mostly pretty good in his statements and votes. What happened here?

5. UAE is no joking matter.
This country's leaders (same people who own Dubai Ports World) are hunting buddies with Osama. They have funneled billions to his operations, using companies such as the one which is currently implementing a number of ultrasensitive data networks for the US Government (next scandal). Two of their citizens were 9/11 hijackers. This is not a random Arab government, with no connection to 9/11 (an example of that would be Iraq). This is a state sponsor of a huge attack on our soil.

4. Being against the UAE port deal is a way for most of us to vent our
anger at Bush and the repug regime.

However, the real issue is not who loads or off-loads the containers but the lack of regulations for the security apparatus around the operations and the lack of funding (voted down repeatedly by the repugs)to administer security measures.

This port deal gives repugs cover for their failures since 9/11 to pay attention to port security. My fear is that as soon as the repug congress members can point to their record of stopping the UAE deal they will again stop thinking about port security. The repugs will go back to their districts and beat their chests about how much more secure we are because they stopped the UAE and no one will remember that they pay no attention to national security at our ports the other 364 days out of the year.

6. Agreed, however this deal also rewards a terrorist nation.
The issue of security is no doubt on the minds of Americans and rightfully so. But what I find objectionable is the notion that this deal would ever have been even considered in the first place, given the UAE's involvement with terrorism. How could anybody in their right mind approve this considering the UAE's banking system was used to finance 9/11, two of the 19 attackers held UAE passports, and the UAE royals hobnob with Osama, the "mastermind" of 9/11.

That is the reality I can't fathom.

8. Moran's explanation:
“It is premature, we don’t have enough information and … it may turn out to be unnecessary,” Moran said.

9. He's not known for his good judgement...
Let 'em vote however they want. This is an issue that will be big in throwing out the rascals presently in power and that alone makes it worthwhile.
