The Supreme Court, a great reason to be ABB
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 07:36 PM by Hippo_Tron
This is pretty self explanatory. Chances are that more than one justice will retire in the next four years. If Bush is re-elected we've seen what kind of trash he's already tried to put on the bench, chances are he will do the same for the supreme court. And pushing these nominees through the court will be a top priority for Frist. Don't count on a fillibuster being so easy this time as Frist will probably run the Senate 24 hours a day and on weekends if he has to. If Bush gets even one justice on the court it could be the end of Roe v Wade, Affirmative Action, and the Assault Weapons Ban. I urge everybody to be ABB if for no other reason than the future of our constitution.

Edit for the mods: I stuck this in the GD-2004 Forum because of all negativity towards one candidate or another going on here. If you do decide to lock it I will understand it and move it to the GD forum but I just thought it would go best here.

1. yes, absolutely
For all those who think John Kerry is the bubonic plague with hair, just try to argue that Kerry would be bad for the country on judicial nominations.

Please try to argue that.

2. You are right. But millions of voters don't even think about this.
Especially the apolitical ones who always vote, but using criteria most of us would think mindless. How many times, during prez elections, can we remember this vitally important issue being used by Dem candidates??? Of course they should, but they rarely do; I suspect it's because the SCOTUS doesn't resonate with the masses, as much as that ever popular question, "Which nominee do you LIKE the most?"

We had BETTER nominate a person whom the 10% voters in the middle LIKE the best, or the Dem platforms and the compostion of the SCOTUS will not be in OUR hands! Sadly, it's as simple as that.

3. It's true.
It's the most important thing we face. Even more important than the IWR, Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind, etc.

But I can still advocate for the nomination of a different candidate and criticize any candidate until the nominee is clear.

If a "leading brand" candidate cannot withstand the heat now, he won't be able to withstand it in the summer.

12. why is it fear mongering when decisions in some cases s/he describes
were 5-4, and it is almost always the same bloc who votes together, with O'Connor the swing vote?

6. This is self-evident to me.
I received an article by Ruth Bader Ginsburg discussing this very issue in my email today.

The idea of another couple of Scalia's is enough to keep me ABB.

10. I sure will.
However, I had deleted it already and just sent for another copy, so it probably won't happen before tomorrow.

I will bookmark this and PM you when it goes up.

8. Democrats are confirming conservative judges at the district and appellate
level, with the exception of the most extremist. That's where the majority of the cases are decided. Since only a small fraction of cases ever gets a hearing at SCOTUS, we are already losing at the lower level without even getting a chance in the already biased Supreme Court.

14. Well they're not really confirming, they're just not fillibustering...
You really do kind of have to pick and choose your battles.

9. That alone will have an affect for many, many, many years
to come. Just one Supreme Court nomination can change the course of history drastically. That alone is reason enough to vote for the Democratic nominee whether you like him or not.

11. You're so right. Wish one or more of our candidates would raise this,
but maybe they plan to in the GE, not now, since they would all agree on this.
