Inspired by the excellent article on DU's home page: http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/06/02/25_timidity.html

It seems to me that we seriously need to think about propping up any quality OBJECTIVE press outlets. While I don't believe that any major outlet besides FOX News and the Washington Times are necessarily totally biased, I do believe that most have become lazy and subject to think-tank, Rovian manipulation.

In other words, they can't be bothered to pick up the phone and get a liberal/progressive take on the latest e-mail from the Heritage Foundation's Press Room.

I think most don't care to uphold their position as pillars of a strong democracy anymore, or they don't even realize (even more dangerous) that they are one of the pillars of democracy.

We need to think about outlets with the possibility for broad based appeal beyond political ideologies. On the tube, on the net, at the front door and newsstand.

FWIW, I'm old enough to remember Helen Thomas and the REAL WH press corps in their prime during Watergate/Vietnam. It frustrates the hell out of me to see what they have become.

Any thoughts/suggestions?

1. support mediamatters.org and FAIR
There are other things that could be done, but no one seems to want to do them. Letter-writing to professional organizations, protests outside news HQs, yada yada. Dems don't seem to care enough about media reform to stir themselves. At least Dems ought to care enough to support mediamatters and writers who have been/are being blackballed.
