Rita Cosby: "Dems going after the hoodlum vote..the African-American vote"

Digby turned me on to this one. Did Crosby just get back from a hunting trip before this segment? Even Matthews was stunned. Look at Scarborough's face too.

Video-WMP

Video-QT

Digby:

Braindead Hotshot Rita Cosby said that it's wrong that the Republicans in South Carolina are asking for church rolls to target the evangelical vote but it's just as wrong that Democrats are targeting the "hoodlum vote." Yes, the hoodlum vote. When a plainly confused Chris Matthews asked what she meant, she explained that Democrats were going through voter rolls to find felons to vote for them...read on

73. Matthews, Scarborough, Carlson...all three were disgusted...
...and I'm sure Scarborough and Carlson are going through massive ego issues ANYWAY about the "Hardball Hotshots" gig on Fridays as opposed to a full hour of their own shows.

These guys are all blatantly focused on their own self-interests. They're not going to want to be associated with this kind of racist nonsense.

We have enough problems with overcoming racism in America without people like Ann Coulter and now Rita "Foghorn" Cosby getting into the act. Lovely, Rita...NOT!

4. For those who have not watched the video clip...
...she DID say "the hoodlum vote...the African-American vote..." while barely taking a breath between the two phrases.

But as Crooks & Liars says...look at Scarborough and Tweety after she makes the remark. It's a certified "WTF" moment, and I'm sure the "Hardball Hotshots" will get some feedback on this one.

This woman is about as clueless as they come.

31. Rita Cosby

Charges: Unholy pastiche of fearmongering and celebrity ringworm with the brain of a moth, the integrity of a tapeworm, and the appearance and larynx of a sugar-addicted, glass-eating drag queen.

Exhibit A: Her banter with Joe Scarborough kills children.

Sentence: Kicked in the nuts.

Interesting how SHE called the move to reinstate the right to vote for felons racist.

My emails to Tweety and the viewer services email:

I am offended and frankly appalled at Rita Cosby's comment that Democrats are going after the "hoodlum vote," thereby comparing the African-American vote with hoodlums. I found it racist and quite ignorant on the part of Ms. Cosby, and she owes Hardball's viewers an apology.

Also, why is that during the "Hardball Hotshots" segment on Fridays, there is rarely (exception was two week's ago when Ron Reagan was a participant) a voice from "the left"? There is no balance! I felt like I was watching Fox News.

Thank you.

You know something?

Maybe it's time for you to cut one of the "Hardball Hotshots" loose.

I sat there in stunned amazement as Rita Cosby said that the Democrats are chasing the "hoodlum vote...the African-American vote."

The clip is on the Crooks & Liars Web site: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2006/02/24.html#a7288

So, rather than have you deny it or scrub her remarks from the transcript or claim that she is an "innocent victim" whose remarks have been taken out of context, watch the clip.

Then FIRE THIS WOMAN. We don't need ignorance and racism in our news.

You should be ASHAMED of yourselves for airing this.

33. My blog article on this
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 10:24 PM by Eric J in MN
http://www.speakspeak.org/speak-blog/2006/02/24/hardball-tonight-panel-without-liberals/

The popular blog Crooks and Liars points out that Rita Cosby said on tonight’s show that Democrats are going after the “hoodlum vote.” This is her strange way of describing the belief that citizens should be allowed to vote even if they have been convicted of a crime. I’m among the people who believe the right to vote is so central to citizenship that being convicted shouldn’t prevent one from voting; apparently Rita Cosby would hold that belief against me.

Rita Cosby also says it’s “racist” for Democrats to oppose the disenfranchisement of felons. I suppose that means she would consider me a “racist,” since I’m against disenfranchising citizens over the age of 18 who want to vote.

140. There are several felons in the current administration ~ even though
Edited on Sun Feb-26-06 05:42 PM by Catrina
they were pardoned, I imagine they should be disenfranchised according to Rita's standards, (well, if they were black maybe?). Otoh, I'm laughing at the idea that if they were black they would have been pardoned in the first place, so forget I said this.

However, Dick Cheney has two DWIs ~ Bush has one (as far as we know). I think Cheney is pretty close to being a felon ~ (I mean on the DWI situaton).

She might regret saying that considering how many Repubs are now convicted Felons.

I have a question for Rita ~ should these 'hoodlums' lose their right to vote?

Gov. Rowland of Conn., Abramoff, Kidan and Scanlon, together with their three Mafia 'consultants' accused of murder, Duke Cunningham and the Repub. defense contractor who bribed him, and Larry Franklin, just for starters, all convicted Republican heroes of the right ~ When they serve their time, should they still be denied the right to vote?

Here are a few more Republicans currently under indictment, ie Tom Delay, David Safavian, Scooter Libby, Gov. Ryan and a whole host of his Repub. aides (30 indictments, total) not to mention the long, long list of Republicans who probably will be indicted and convicted.

And more Republicans currently under investigation, Frist, Hastert, Feith, Ledeen, Hadley, Rove, Cheney, and more. So many Republican hoodlums, so few of them African American!!

And let's not forget that other Republican scandal, Coingate ~ Gov. Taft, Noe and Ney et al.

So, Rita thinks Dems are trying to recruit African American hoodlums ~ maybe, but they'd be out of luck if they were trying to recruit rich, White American hoodlums, the Republican Party already scooped them all up!!

They used to be more subtle about their partisanship and racism ~

I wonder if she should be "allowed" to vote? Aside from the blatantly racist element of her comments, she is suggesting that people who have the right to vote, should be denied the right because of their criminal record. You either have the right or you don't. There is nothing wrong with encouraging people to vote. If they have the right as stated by the law, then they should vote. Fuck Rita.

Unfortunately, I've heard this same thing from another pristine white lady lawyer. She just couldn't understand why we would have any compassion for felons. Then I reminded her how our society tends to go harder on minorities than whites, and when you're systematically start targeting young black or hispanic men for felonies before they're 21, then you're knocking an entire sector out before they've even had a chance to become adults.

Giving felons the right to vote is no guarantee that they will vote at all. But what it will do is free those people who have been wrongly scrubbed off the list by overzealous private corporations.

Well, with such open-minded and caring representatives of the republican party as ms. 83. Hoodlum Vote - Any Vote Counts
The Dems got to get off their perch and take any damn vote they can get - Hoodlum, African American, Native American, White, Hispanic etc. etc.

I hear ya on the shabby azz comments, but ya' think its time for the Democrats to wake up to these NeoCon games and take their shots with the intention of a damn Knock Out?

Hell, the NeoCons will take any damn votes they can get and have proven it!

This political scene in the U.S. of A. is a free-kin war!

And the Dems better realize there are no damn rules in war - none at free-kin all! Its all about survival, and sure as hell looks to me the Neocon MoFo's know how to use this tactic and any damn tactic to their advantage!

Time for the Dems to change their stradegy and get a free-kin pair and toughen' the hell up!

If this doen't happen, might as well put a sign on the White Hootch - NeoCon Inn!

Think the Dems need a few hoodlum advisors to straighten their act out before there is no act at all!

Hang Tough~

Usually these right wing talking heads and politicians have the good sense to wait for their talking points from GOP Central. At least then they have been carefully crafted and researched to ensure they sound reasonable.

97. A lot of irony behind your statement...
...because in the documentary "The Howlin' Wolf Story - The Secret History of Rock & Roll," Wolf is in the presence of a drunken and belligerent Son House. He puts up with him for a few minutes and then gives him a complete smackdown, saying something like "This man is angry because he hasn't done anything with his life."

I've talked to several Wolf fans who have seen this film, and when I mention that moment they ALL say "Oh YEAH..." It's a show-stopper, and a good metaphor for Cosby and her ilk.

House was indeed a major influence and near god to Wolf. It seems that witnessing such a display was heartbreaking for Wolf. Eventually, he lashes out in anger at House. While there was great truth in what Wolf said, there is also a large measure of grief.
It is an astonishing and heartbreaking scene.

When an inmate has completed his sentence and probation, get a job- they are regular people like everyone else. Pay taxes, etc. They just know how the underclass works and use it to their advantage. States that think otherwise are states I would not want to live in.
Have not checked out revicidism rates in Vt. But would be shocked if not the Vt prison system works at turning out good citizens; instead of strict punishment.
Would it not be justice if Harris and Cunningham could not but share wings of a penitentary and worry about their voting rights being suspended- when Harris gets out. Maybe the ***** will move to Vermont.

As soon as KO has uttered his last sentence, many times even before, I change channels so I'm not exposed to her bloated, frumpy image and most of all, THAT VOICE! :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

She's a clown, a Tammy Faye Baker with vocal cords that can strip paint.

147. Coincidence...
early in Ms Rita Cosby's "journalistic" career, she actually covered Tammy Faye Bakker when she did WBTV 3 here in Charlotte. She was on the "crime beat", and believe me, there was plenty to cover there. That might explain her husky voice, but it was not as pronounced then as it is now.

PS, she is not a small woman, by any stretch. Not in Ms. Crowley's league, but still had a few extra pounds, not that there is anything wrong with that. At least Ms. Crowley's journalistic skillset is as big as she is. That cannot be said for Ms. Cosby.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Describes my husband to a tee! I got him to start watching Olbermann, and he loves him. BUT he reaches for the remote as soon as Olbermann starts the Good Night and Good Luck ending. He cannot stand Rita or her voice. How she ever got a career in broadcasting with that annoying voice is beyond me too!

Ms. Crosby has identified herself as one who would have nixed the idea of saving the NO "refugees" because they should have "pulled themselves up by the bootstraps."

Funny how a simple statement like that paints her so precisely.

125. There are Only So Many Pills One Can Take
If only she took the wrong one at the wrong time, everything would be much better.

On note: She does look like a blow up doll, doesn't she. Plastic and used.

135. How many Nazi journalists were tried at Nurenburg trials for enabling
Ann colter has been getting away with it for quite a while.

Someone on Smirking Chimp wrote that journalists who supported hitler were tried at Nurenburg. None got the death penalty but I wonder how many served time for enabling this horror?

Good thing to write the neo-monsters at the "Traditional Media" when sending outraged emails about their latest outrage.

139. There was a time not so long ago
when networks cared so much as to fire commentators for making racist remarks. Today, these talking heads can get away with spouting anything out their filthy mouths and instead of the networks firing them, they get rewarded with a TV show or radio show. The media no longer gives a shit. Racism is in vogue with these people.

149. Rita just thought she was in the company of Repugs. Can ya blame her?
When Repugs are in the same company of people that either they assume are Repugs or are Repugs, the conversation eventually goes into gaybashing, ni$%er hating, calling liberals "commies" and :socialists", speculative humor littered with racist thoughts and chiming in on how great Reagan was.

She just thought she was hangin' with her friends...hence the "hoodlum" comment. The dumb biotch...

152. My e-mail to MSNBC (and it better not bounce...)
Rita Cosby must either apologize or resign immediately

I saw Cosby refer to "the African-American vote" as "the hoodlum vote" on Friday night. I may not be black, but this comparison sends a chill up my spine nonetheless.

If she's going to denigrate my fellow Americans that way, she needs to bow out gracefully and make way for someone like Rachel Maddow, Ken Hamblin, or someone who can be a great reporter and still never trash the black vote in America.

Thank you, and good evening.

I was just watching Entertainment Tonight, and either Rita or Cojo was talking about what the stars are going to wear on Oscar night. God, they even sound alike.
