GOP insider out at investing firm

The Carlyle Group and Springfield lobbyist Robert Kjellander, treasurer of the National Republican Party, "don't have an ongoing relationship at the moment," said David Rubenstein, a founder and managing director of Carlyle.

The Illinois Teachers' Retirement System agreed to invest up to $500 million with Carlyle under six deals while Kjellander was representing Carlyle, but he is no longer registered as a lobbyist for the firm.

"It was never to be a forever thing," Kjellander said of his role with Carlyle, adding the teachers' fund kept investing with the firm because of "magnificent" returns. "It got to the point that I wasn't necessary."

Word that Washington-based Carlyle and Kjellander had parted ways emerged as the Illinois Senate Executive Committee approved legislation last week that includes pension and ethics proposals prompted in part by Tribune disclosures of hefty consulting fees and political connections at the state pension systems.
