The Oregonian: Thank the Dean mascot, now go win
Thank the Dean mascot, now go win

Susan Nielsen

Howard Dean is the mascot of the Democratic Party, the guy in the furry costume who gets people on their feet yelling for a win.

I've always loved the mascot best. Alas, mascots don't win games. It's time for Democrats, independents and disgruntled Republicans to start rallying behind a Kerry/Edwards ticket, a winning duo that could send President Bush limping to the showers.

But Kerry's got what counts. He understands foreign policy. He believes in international cooperation. He's strong on domestic issues. He has a sturdy moral code and an appreciation for citizenship, grounded in his honorable service in Vietnam. He speaks in meaty paragraphs rather than in spoon-fed sound bites.

Kerry's campaign can't seem to much without checking what others are doing.

Here in northern MI the Kerry campaign called our Dem HQ. They were thinking of sending a staffer. Guess what the first thing out of that guy's mouth was.....

Is Dean sending staff?

I still slap my thigh over that. Can't believe my luck at being there at that moment. How revealing.

Some leader!
