WASHINGTON — President Bush told nervous lawmakers in his own party on Friday that Republicans should stress the economy and the War on Terror as they move deeper into the election year.
Bush also defended his administration's terrorism surveillance program, and vowed to stay the course in the global campaign to wipe out terrorism, according to participants in a closed-door session. "Don't lose your nerve. I'm not going to lose mine," one member of his audience quoted him as saying.
Bush spent more than 90 minutes with House Republicans, gathered for a retreat at a resort on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He spoke near the midpoint of their three-day meeting, a blend of policy and politics that included the premiere of a tongue-in-cheek video modeled on Star Wars.
Shown to lawmakers on Thursday night, the video lampooned GOP political opponents as "The evil Democrat empire." California Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader, was depicted as "Darth Nancy."
