Kerry vs Dean in New Hampshire / SHOCKING results !
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 11:08 AM by Skinner
Interesting Points:

MORE voters feel Dean has the right temperment to be President than Kerry.

Voters 'angry' with the Bush* administration chose Dean over Kerry.

Voters opposed to IWR chose Dean over Kerry.

Voters concerned with 'issues' chose Dean over Kerry.

In summation, a sizable number of those who voted for Kerry - approved of IWR, aren't angry with Bush*, don't care about issues as much as electability, feel Kerry CAN beat Bush*, but think his temperment is WORSE than the candidate labelled as 'angry', Howard Dean.

I don't know if I've ever seen such damning support for a candidate in my life.

The findings were from preliminary results of a survey of 1,375 New Hampshire Democratic primary voters, conducted for AP and the television networks by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International. Results were subject to sampling error of plus of minus 4 percentage points, higher for subgroups.

One in five voters said the quality that mattered most in their decision was that their candidate can defeat Bush, and Kerry won six in 10 of their votes. Kerry, the longtime U.S. senator and decorated Vietnam War veteran, did equally well among the one in 10 who said the top quality is that "he has the right experience."

About three in 10 said the top quality was that "he stands up for what he believes," and Dean, the tough-talking former Vermont governor, won half their votes. About one in 10 said the top quality was that "he has a positive message" and they split pretty evenly among Kerry, Edwards and Dean.

Asked if they voted for their candidate more because he can defeat Bush in November or because "he agrees with you on the major issues," a third said defeating Bush was a higher priority, and half of them favored Kerry. Dean had an edge among those who said the candidate's stand on issues was more important.

1. Would someone please explain how Kerry is electable?

How is nominating a Massachusetts liberal who was Dukakis’s running mate (when he ran for Gov), who has a higher liberal rating than Ted Kennedy, and who has voted against military funding including funding for equipment critical to our success in Afghanistan going to beat George Bush? Service in Vietnam does not inoculate Democrats from the charge of being weak on defense (just ask George McGovern).

Voters can think for themselves. This poster is disregarding the most important poll. The one where the voter casts his or her vote.

10. What I find funny about Cleland's endorsement is that one of the reasons
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 01:53 AM by MercutioATC
he didn't get re-elected is that the Repubs painted him as "unpatriotic" after he didn't support the Patriot Act. I wonder why he's endorsed somevody who voted to support the very legislation he staked his career on (and lost).

18. Um, this might be slightly beside your point, but Max Cleland
was "not reelected" because there were Diebold cheating machines
in GA, so he got Florida'd. That election was stolen from him
just like Gore's election was stolen.

He's pretty much ruled out the chance to fight Bush on the war, civil liberties or education. What's left, the boxers or briefs debate?

11. Yup -- I can
First, you steal the popular guy's entire message (even, in Iowa, going so far as to claim in one of his speeches that HE is the one who has "the greatest grassroots movement in history," in contravention of reality).

Then you get your boy Whouley, the Dem equivalent of Karl Rove (See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/16/opinion/printable593698.shtml ) to do such dirty tricks as push polling -- even including anti-Semitic innuendo against Dr. Judy Steinberg Dean.

Then you offer the VP slot or something to the guy who can't win anyway but who CAN give you votes, and most important of all, you put the Governor's political machine in place in your favor.

And so forth. There's more to it than that, but that's a pretty good start.

27. He's not -
the media would like for us to think that it's all over in February, but we know better than that.

I'm comfortable that the Democratic candidate will beat Bush. I'm pulling for the guy who faces me to speak the truth, not the one who looks down his nose and offers platitudes that I've heard a million times before.

Final results:
Kerry 38.5%
Dean 26.3%
Clark 12.4%
Edwards 12.1%
Lieberman 8.6%
Kucinich 1.4%
all others <1%

12. This is why I cannot comprehend
the notion that Kerry is "electable" and Dean is not. Dean actually knows how to balance a budget and stands up for what he believes in. Kerry seems to be another example of a politician who is all style and no substance.

To me the most telling this is that people who care about issues choose Dean over Kerry.

19. Because they looked at Howard and they looked at John
And they said: "Who do I think would be the better man to beat Bush and lead us as President."

Tha answer was: John Kerry.

Honestly, I think people forget that DU is but a microcosm of the real world. Not everyone is as finely tuned to the politics as we are.....many, many people vote on image and preception.

I happen to think that they got this one right, this time. :-)

17. the only shocking result
is that Dean lost so badly after spending two years and many millions of dollars in NH.

The voters are deciding - as it should be. Dean is doing poorly - as it should be.

is how clark had nh to himself for almost 3 weeks before the primary, was gaining on dean, had overtaken kerry - and just SANK (like a military bomb) when the voters had their say.

you wanna try again?

I don't need to try again. Clark was never the frontrunner. Clark didn't blow through 40 million dollars. Clark didn't self-destruct on live TV.

34. Warning: poster is misrepresenting this poll. Nowhere does it say
that more people think Dean has the temperament to be president than Kerry.

Here is what you said:"MORE voters feel Dean has the right temperment to be President than Kerry"

Here is what the article said:"Six in 10 said Dean "has the temperament to serve effectively as president" and Dean far outpaced Kerry among that group. But among the one-third who said Dean does not have a presidential temperament, half voted for Kerry and the nearly all the rest split among Edwards, Clark and Lieberman."

Nowhere does it say that more voters thought Dean had them temperament than Kerry. That is factual misrepresentation. The question was not who has the better temperament. It only asked about Dean.

As for the rest:

"Voters concerned with 'issues' chose Dean over Kerry."

The poll did not allow for more than one choice. I for one care deeply about the issues. Therefore because I care about the issues I want someone who can beat Bush. It is the only way to get the issues we care about dealt with properly. So I made my choice among the candidates on the issues, but I would have answered that it was more important to have someone who can beat Bush.

The article also says the following:"Three in 10 voters said the issue that mattered most in their vote was health care and Medicare, and they gave Kerry an edge. Two in 10 cited economy and jobs, and they favored Kerry. Dean ran strongly among the two in 10 who said the Iraq war mattered most, but Kerry wasn't far behind in that group."

So even though people who chose on issues were in majority for Dean, when asked about the issues they either chose Kerry or it was very close.
