2006 U.S. Senate Elections ~~ Never say Never!!
First of all to "nadinbzezinski" .. shame on your for your "It's all over folks" thread.

It's going to be hard. ~~~But calling it "all over folks" is CRAZY TALK!!

So we'll need to pick up 5 for a tie, 6 for a majority... right?

1. Pennsylvania - Santorum Out (he's a weasel) .. Casey Appears to be favored.
2. Montana - Burns Out (He's in too deep with Abramoff) .. John Tester IN.
3. Tennessee - Harold Ford, Jr. wins it.
4. Ohio - DeWine whines all the home >> Major Paul Hackett IN.

Number 5 is where I get stuck.. Here's some possibilities..

* Rhode Island? Is Chafee really so paranoid he may switch parties?

* Alaska recount? Everyone knows Knowles WON. (Diebold is freaking out with the Great White North. Alaska had Diebold.. but who knew they'd also use paper ballots! )

* Virginia? Will the "Diebold Democrat" (Harris Miller) manipulate his way in? Will Webb win it? (ok, this one's a long-shot  )

* Missouri? D-McCaskill & R-Talent are in deadheat and they don't care for Bush in St. Louis these days ( http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/CF66D2E05AD353B2862570FD00272626?OpenDocument )

And we have to make sure we hang on to Florida!! B-)

Any other states that should be added.. deleted.. changed?

5. Don't count out dems in Nevada and Arizona
Kyl is unpopular and will likely face a Democrat with very deep pockets. In Nevada Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is hugely popular and could make a run at Ensign.

2006 is going to be a huge year, I think the perfect storm is forming for us to take back Congress.

6. Could Oscar Goodman be talked into running?
I mean.. it would be great to see President Carter's son get in.. but if he's not doing so hot in the polls up against Ensign --- but Goodman is --- someone needs to talk to that boy!

C'mon Oscar, DO IT !!!

8. Santorum is political dead meat
Well, nadinbzezinski must be having a bad week. She's a scrapper. She'll be back, knife held in her teeth, ready to spill some major electoral/political blood and dance on entrails -- their entrails ...

As to Santor(ect)um ...

It was all about guns and fetuses in 1994, but these days, his brand of fire-brewed moralizing doesn't play as well, especially since Pennsylvania has turned into a bigger seismic zone than California. There's still a few Milton Shapp era judges around with a few brain cells to rub together, so any time you see a "Jerrold" brand cable converter, say a silent prayer of thanks to the late, lamented Governor Shapp. He invented cable TV, foresaw the Internet, financed early computer companies, and was a Progressive in an era when anyone in politics was hated.

Okay, that's a different definition of "seismic" in Pennsylvania, but the change has been major. In my own area, the 'burbs of Philly, what was once a collected "multytood" of reliably Republican votes ("after all, Democrats aren't manly and all they want to do is raise taxes and marry gays" -- well, that idea is long gone, too) has become strongly Democratic. The GOP has raised taxes anyway, and two or three high-profile, incredibly disgusting hate crimes really threw a spanner into the plans of the sex bigots. (For instance, one gay man was killed for no reason at all -- his throat was slashed so badly that he was nearly decapitated, and the mess was horrifying. And the perps left the body in full view of a suburban development, complete with school buses and children.)

Specter is also probably in his last few years; I think he's up in 2008, but he's getting old, and the cancer has kicked his once-formidable ass. It's a mixed bag with Arlen, because he's also been a thorn in the shoe of three Republican presidents already. Still, getting a young, energetic, take-no-prisoners Democratic Senator to take his place would be a strong move.

Looking at your list, I'd say that you only have four listed because they're the highest profile races. There are at least ten other races that are close enough that all of them could be challenged and cause a Republican run on Kaopectate and Imodium. Half of the Senate seats in the race are unsafe this time, and as Bush's incompetence and craven power-lust become better-appreciated, they will be right under the debris track of the fallout.

Only something bigger than another 9-11 can save the Republican Counter-Revolution -- maybe a nuclear explosion. So the faster we can accomplish the recovery of the American government, the safer we will be.

9. I'm with YOU, larissa!! It ain't over 'til it's over.
Anyone who laments the 2006 election now doesn't understand elections. At all.

They hinge on the last 3 months in today's world. Hell, half the people can't NAME their own senators.

10. You're under the assumption.........
that if elected they'd actually VOTE like Democrats though. That's the flaw in your logic. I've seen nothing in the past few years to suggest that even if Democrats are elected that they will stick together and vote as a bloc. Of what use is electing Democrats if they're going to splinter and back the bush agenda anyway?

11. If they're Democrats, then the Party gets the Committee chairs and
the party gets control of the committees.

It's much easier to enforce party voting when you're in the majority.

12. You get the majority,
you get the committees, you get power, and voila, you get some spine. Dems win back the Senate, they'll control the agenda and introduce legislation of their own.
