A Reminder - Roe is not what is at stake
Edited on Wed Feb-01-06 12:11 PM by Anser
Many of you may already know this, but I think its an important reminder:

The Republican party platform does NOT advocate the overturning of Roe v. Wade. They want an embryo to be defined as a person under the 14th amendment.

From the 2004 Republican Party Platform "...we endorse legislation to make it clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children "

Just to give some background: Neither the disenters in the original Roe decision, nor any of the dissenters (yes even Scalia) of any of the subsequent cases that have limited, but not overturned, Roe, have claimed that a fetus is a person as defined by the Constitution.

Defining an embryo as a person would give it equal protection with a woman carrying it. In other words, since the 14th amendement applies specifically to the states, such a definition would mean that NO state could EVER have legal abortion. Not in blue states, not in cases of incest or rape, not to save a woman's life... Never.

I've noticed a media blitz lately that has tried to frame the issue as dealing with federalism (State's Rights) and how the Right want to give states control by overturning Roe. This is completely untrue. The Right wants to limit a State's power more than ever.

No State is safe from the direction our country is moving, no matter how blue.

So if a woman's health is a majorly important issue for any of you, remember that these platforms do matter, and that we have to keep Republicans out of office. Even when the Dem running against them may be somewhat squishy on other issues such as Iraq. We have to deal with the squishy dems in the primaries.

1. A Roe overturn is the first attempt at creating a national church.

That is why the fundies are trying so hard too pass ID design into the public school system.
The whole thing is an attempt to blend all brands of Christianity into one pro life cult.

2. And, someone seeking or performing an abortion will be a murderer.
Even if they leave the country to get an abortion, they can probably be charged with "conspiracy to commit a murder".

Any "illegal" abortion will be a murder.

Etc.

Think about it.

3. If a pregnant woman miscarries, there will be a presumption of murder
unless she can prove that it was a spontaneous "Act of God".

4. That's how it was in Hitler's Germany
No need to invoke Godwin's Law. That's a matter of historical fact.

5. federalism..
..means the national government. Or, back in the early days, Federalists were supporters of the constitution. They believed that the Federal Gov, should be GREATER than the states.

Anti-Federalists, were the supporters of states' rights.

Washington was a Federalist.

Jefferson was an Anti-Federalist.
