On Dean's win-ability and why I don't matter
Edited on Wed Dec-24-03 11:17 AM by Stuckinthebush
Fine. Dean can't win. We can argue until we are blue in the face about Dean not being able to beat Bush because of this or that or the other thing. They said the same about Clinton and the same about Reagan, but then again they said the same about McGovern. Each season is different.

But you know what? It doesn't matter what I do or think and it doesn't matter what most of us on this board do or think. I'm in Alabama - we don't have our vote on this thing until June. By then, it's all over. So, I can proudly hang my Dean sticker on my bumper with the full knowledge that it won't matter a bit. Most of you are in states other than NH, SC or Iowa. Unfortunately, these three will play a very large part in determining who our candidate is. How crazy is that?

So, stop wasting breath here if you believe that Clark is the man or Kucinich is the real liberal, start a letter writing campaign to all the Democratic voters in those three states. If you can convince the NH voters and the SC voters that Clark would be better against Bush than Dean, then Clark will win it. Personally, I think many have a point about Dean and I would happily support any of the nominees against Bush (and yes, even Joe).

Get out there and start writing.

1. Why do I feel like I've had this conversation before
In the summer a lot of Dean supporters I remember used the McGovern arguement on us(DK support corp), now that Clark has entered, the tables have turned, sucks honest, I dont find Dean to be McGovern at all, and may I add that McGovern was a fine man. Anyways I dont expect DK to win in Iowa, but I do expect people to be pleasantly suprised, every person big or small, white or black, young or old matters. Now on writing to voters :), do you think they would be able to read the chicken scratch I call my handwriting, sure I may do that. I bet some of these people have been writing too btw.

4. I feel the same way.
I was an early skeptic/critic of Dean. He is way to the right of me. Unless things change between now and when these things are decided it looks to me that Dean is the one whether I like it or not so I am basically preparing myself to support him. If things completely change and Clark (or somebody else) is the one then I will stand on overpasses and streetcorners with a big "Clark for President" sign every damn day! I just wish we knew already!!

5. Primaries, etc.
This may be off the main point a bit, but I agree that the primary system is messed up. From my understanding, McAuliffe wanted the primaries frontloaded so a nominee was picked sooner rather than later. In retrospect, I don't know how wise that is because the nominee is going to be picked in all likelihood by two states that don't represent the majority of Americans or Democrats. If Dean wins Iowa and NH, it's pretty much over, barring some catastrophic development.

Frankly, I'd like to see a national primary day, where all states vote on the same day. New Hampshire and Iowa are examples of quaint politics where candidates campaign with their feet, but in the television age (and the internet age), maybe it doesn't make as much sense as it used to.

9. Patience, patience
Not that I necessarily support this system of primaries, there is one benefit: the momentum it builds for one or two or three candidates... Maybe some candidates will drop out of the race before the primaries are finished.

7. I know how ya feel
I live in KY, the primary is in late May. I am a Dean supporter who wished she lived in an earlier primary state, but I will continue to work for him and think he'll make the nomination and the general election.
