Bush Plays Down Bailout Prospects For GM and Ford
By CHRISTOPHER COOPER and JOHN D. MCKINNON
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
January 26, 2006

WASHINGTON – President Bush said General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. should develop "a product that's relevant" rather than look to Washington for help with their heavy pension obligations, and hinted he would take a dim view of a government bailout of the struggling auto makers.

<snip>

Asked if the government should take any pre-emptive action, he said: "I think it's very important for the market to function."

++++++++++
I am amused by someone, whose friends and family connections had to bail him out of his own business failures, wants to see the market "function." Chimpy, do you remember Harken? Granted, it was not the actual government bailing you out, but you got help in the nick of time.

1. A bailout wouldn't do any good
They would just piss the money away and still close plants and lay people off anyway.

3. Oh, I'm not
suggesting a bailout is the way to go--my issue is BushCo hanging around to throw the first clod of dirt onto the coffin. I grew up in the Motor City and have long been critical of the decisions the big three have made. For decades they have acted like ostriches. But, I have great empathy for the people who have worked for thirty years in the plants who will lose their retirement money and health benefits.

4. Just like the airlines huh?
Guess maybe Ford and GM should just merge with the foreign car makers and be done with it. World car for everyone. Your only choice is color.

No thanks. I'll burn rice before I drive it.

2. "should develop "a product that's relevant"
I almost fell of my chair. I'll wager a full 90% of Georgie's supporters own a GM or Ford SUV or Truck. So basically he's saying all those folks are just as irrelevant as the product they drive.

11. Oh dear and I thought GM was making trucks and HumVees
for the military. I suppose thaey are not relevant products. I guess a war effort consideration didn't occur to Georgie. This guy has so many faces, the puts dice to shame.

Little history lesson there Georgie, back in the day when Chrystler was going teets up, the bail out was made to save them. Good thing too, as Chrystler had the single largest foundry machinery in the US capable of making the then new MI Abrahms tank.

BTW Georgie, you ain't gonna invade IRAN on foot ya know. perhaps GM and FORD should simply move on over to China, lock stock and Barrel. I'm sure they'd find some cold cash to set em up good and quick.

Of course we are only talking patents, and equipment for china China has no use for the designers, market analysts, and management types running a good US industry into the ground. And they sure enough have plenty of labor there so they won't need our folks.

9. What does he give a shit?
Michigan never voted for him, in the primary and in two general elections. He probably thinks the workers are getting what they deserver for not playing ball at election time.

12. Funny how he doesn't insist brother Neil give back the money from the S&L
bailout. Bailouts are okay with the Bushes as long as one of them or their cronies are the beneficiaries.
