KANSAS CITY, Mo. - John Kerry was poised Saturday to pick up another major endorsement for the Democratic presidential nomination as he sought to exploit his front-runner status to lure political leaders as well as rank-and-file party people.
Kerry, who won fresh labor backing Friday for his White House bid, had one eye focused on Michigan as he campaigned here Saturday. Michigan's Democratic governor, Jennifer Granholm, scheduled a late afternoon news conference to give Kerry her blessing, said party sources speaking on condition of anonymity.
Granholm's endorsement had been expected. Nevertheless, it adds to the momentum the Kerry campaign brings into the big round of delegation-selection contests Tuesday and party caucuses scheduled Feb. 7 in Granholm's Michigan and in Washington state.
By tradition, caucuses are attended by the hardest-core of political activists - the people most likely to be swayed by a gubernatorial endorsement. Kerry had been courting top officials in early presidential selection states, and Granholm's expected announcement was further evidence of an effort bearing fruit.
