Ed Schultz thinks walking out of State of Union Address is a stupid idea
I don't think he has a full picture of the plan. Call him and educate him: 1-877-934-6833

I tried to get through but had no luck. I will keep trying.

6. Ed is awesome...
He asked callers to explain what the ultimate benefits would be --- the pros and cons.

Think about the media we have right now. Now, think about the media we have after we walk out during a SOTU.

Give me a break. ED SCHULTZ IS ON OUR SIDE

You want knuckle-draggers? Tune into Limpballs!

Some here on DU are so far to the left they are as nutty as the far right. Ed is a moderate Dem by our standards but by most standards he is far left. He is open minded and that is refreshing.

40. Actually, I think this thread is creating some good debate
So, no I wont delete it. For some reason people are more gutsy about disagreeing with the "walk out" idea then they were in Will Pitts thread. I don't remember hardly any dissenters in that thread. The fact that so many DUers actually seem to be against the walk out is making me question my original position.

32. He has also backed Dean hard core when appearing on the MSM
His treatment of Murtha has been fine, he has backed Murtha 95% of the time but disagreed with him on weather people should still join the military with Iraq going so badly. 50 years ago if someone has said what Murtha said they would end up Jail. I don't agree with Ed on that but I understand his viewpoint.

You know dissent is supposed to be celebrated on the Democratic side. It seems a few here on DU are turning into NeoDems.

18. Good idea
To be honest I am on the fence on the idea. It would have to be very well thought out or it could completely backfire and make the Dems look really bad. I just want to see if someone could convince Big Ed. If he could be convinced then I would be more inclined to think it might work. Right now I don't think it's worth the risk but I want to hear someone give him a good debate on it.

I think your idea is safer and would get the point across nicely.

23. alternate SOTU activity?
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 05:52 PM by liam_laddie
As much as I'd love to take a ball bat to *'s head and groin, I think a walkout would backfire.
Dems could just not show up, but then there'd be no media coverage of the opposition bloc,
Or no chance to refute the lies. FYI, I'm 68, been around the block a few times, think of
myself as a progressive, if not tilting radical...

Monday, I sent Wm. Rivers Pitt** a message to the effect that a walkout will be spun by media in
the exact opposite way that it's intended. I believe the downside risk of blowback far outweighs
the temporary, feel-good upside we'd experience. (**originator of the walkout idea, SFAIK.)

I suggested that all Dems wear an over-the-shoulder sash, all exactly same color blue, such as
were worn (orange) in Ukraine and also used in many countries (Northern Ireland comes to
mind) as a sign of unity. It's "non-confrontational," and will show very well on TV. It works for women
and men. The sashes could be brought in in pockets and put on when they all sit down. It would
fluster *. No applause, never stand up after he enters. If the Dem members of Congress don't have
the courage for this, we are well and truly a pathetic excuse for an Opposition Party. I agree with
Larissa upthread.

Not serious now, but possible accessories might include BS protectors for ears, "Lie Detector"
cards on neck-chains (like security ID's) and the joke prop of a pile of dog feces to put on each desk.

I think it would look immature. If the dems tried to talk about the speech later, republicans would say, "but you didn't even stick around to listen to it." People will say, "poor losers". I think it would look bad and reflect very poorly on democrats. I just see so many things being spun badly and so many ill effects, it isn't worth it.

Or E-mail him --- he or his wife, Wendy WILL ANSWER YOU!!

I disagree with Ed Schultz once in a while, but that doesn't make him a republican. There are times when he argues the other side of things to start a dialogue on the subject. How exciting would it be if every day he said something and all the people just called in to say, "I agree." I like to hear why you believe what you believe.

I am so tired of hearing "I disagree with him/her so he/she must be a republican!". Wow. To me, it sounds just like the fundy evangelicals that say "If you don't think exactly like us, you are going to hell!"

On Will Pitt's original thread I don't remember seeing anyone disagree with him. All I saw was praise and pats on the back. I was skeptical at first but since everyone seemed united behind the idea I thought I was probably seeing things wrong. For some reason the dissenters on this issue, seem more bold on this thread.

I have to say, I agree with what you said. I am leaning against the walk out now.

47. I saw a few dissenters on the original thread
but they were after the thread had grown to over 200 posts, I believe. That's when I first saw the thread. My first reaction was "it's a bad idea" but I didn't add anything because I wasn't really sure. After thinking about it more, I feel more strongly now that it would just look bad. In my mind, I compare it to other speeches outside the political arena. It would look bad and seem like poor sportsmanship (for lack of a better word) to walk out because you disagree. Besides, the media would never get any democrat's reasons why, they would just air republicans bitching about it.

I just think it makes the other side look more powerful.

50. You are 100% DEAD WRONG
Ed Schultz =WAS= a Republican long before he met his sweet wife Wendy. He's never denied that and talks about it ALL THE TIME on his show.

If you've ever listened to his program... (which sure sounds doubtful) you'd know the exact reasons that he became a Democrat years ago.

He's not a phony like some RINO's and DINO's are - he's open, honest and just a little bit ((( LOUD )))

Eddie goes into lengthy detail about what made him sick of the Republican party---- and what it was that made him see the light and become a Registered DEMOCRAT.

Let me guess.. you probably think that General Wes Clark is a Republican too?

(just a hunch)

I'm really saddened by the intolerance found at DU lately. A small handful of people here don't like a comment by a a fellow DU member, a radio host, a politican, or whoever --- and they blast them with comments like yours calling them a Republican.

It's sad ---and it's wrong ---

51. Ed Shultz is not always right
but he is definately helping. He has the best callers, and most often lets them talk about whatever they want. He even has questions about 9/11! He openly states that the republicans have the elections under control by machine.

Yesterday, he and a caller were discussing Paul Craig Roberts article about our new Gestapo uniform division to be run and expanded by homeland security...Ed seemed a little worried about it and asked "where can I read about that again..?"

52. About Ed Schultz...
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 08:52 PM by sendero
... I listened to him today, but I will admit that my total time listening to him is probably only a couple hours.

Ed is not as left as I am. He is not as angry as I am. I don't agree with everything Ed says.

But - we need Ed on the air and could use a bunch more like him. There is something some of you need to try hard to get your head around. FOLKS ARE NOT GOING TO GO FROM HARD RIGHT TO HARD LEFT IN ONE FELL SWOOP. We need to pull people from the right to the center, and Ed is perfect for that.

The moderation in his positions may sound like "sellout" or "DINO" or "DLC" to you, to me it sounds like someone trying to appeal to the vast middle. On the issues that will EVENTUALLY RESTORE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO POWER, i.e. the ECONOMY and HEALTH CARE - he is usually right there.

Give the man a fucking break already.
