Would The NYT have not printed the NSA story if
Bush had requested they not report it. The NYT as we all know did wait a year and presumably released the story at a time Bush's team felt comfortable with its release.

Was this a politically oportune time for this stories release?

4. no, i'm drowning in books ...
i'm currently reading a book recommended by DU'er Pithy Cherub ... it's called "All the Kings Men" (fiction) ... some of the very best writing i've ever seen ... it's already a week overdue though; i've been sort of savoring every word ... currently looking at a stiff 70 cents fine at the library ...

also right here on the night table is a book recommended by DU'er Donna Zen ... this one's called "The Assassins Gate" ... i think it's about Iraq but haven't had time to even look at it yet ...

there are a few others in the queue ... sometimes i wish i could just put them under my pillow and have them seep into my brain ... i enjoy reading but i'm sort of a read for two minutes and then think about what i read for ten minutes kind of reader ...

5. Assassin's Gate is AWESOME. I couldn't put that one down.
the author is a pro-war liberal, just critical of how bush is dealing with it. still a great read though..

6. pro-war liberals
what next ??

i'm all for a strong defense but "pro war" may be a bit more than i can handle ... it will be interesting to see how he deals with issues like US imperialism and corporatism as a major component of US foreign policy ... the author will have a tough sell with me if those themes are not incorporated into his arguments ... i'm not a pacifist but i am highly skeptical about the US culture of war and the military-industrial complex ... there's a whole lot of money being made on a whole lot of other people's suffering ...

thanks for the info, JB ... hopefully, even in disagreement, an "AWESOME" read will be an awesome read ...

7. well, he was for getting rid of saddam because of his good Iraqi
ex-patriot friend who was for the war and i guess he figured, what the hell, bush is going to do it anyways. it's hard to explain why i thought it was a good book since i am a purist about being anti-war. I can't even handle wes clarks "add more troops and stay and fix it" line of thinking. the author interviewed lots of Iraqi's of all views and all walks of life.It was interesting to hear reasons for the particular views of the Iraqi's. the reason I checked it out of the library is because it's on the new york times "best books of 2005" list. I am like you about being leery of "pro-war" liberal types. just give it a try.

8. i will, thanks ...
you know, after the Alito storm passes by, i'm going to get "re-focussed" on Iraq ... the body count currently stands at 2237 ... it's just a number ... there aren't any lives or families or communities or anything else associated with it ...

how much longer are the Dems calling for over there? Dean - two years; Clark - we need a different strategy but can't leave; Kerry lots of withdrawn troops over the next year but leave around 40 or 50 thousand in place; and don't even get me started on Hillary ... do these Democrats still ascribe to these ideas? to me, it's all madness ... well, maybe the republicans will play politics with Iraq and push for withdrawal and a complete end to the US occupation before the elections ...

thanks again for the recommendation on Assassin's Gate ... i'll definitely give it a try ...

9. Risen
Yep, Keller's hand was forced by Risen's book. Shame, shame on the NYT. Pravda on the Hudson, as far as I'm concerned. Plus I saw that they just promoted the odious Rick Berke to Assistant Managing Editor. What in God's name are they thinking? That dude should be working for Rupert Murdoch by now...
