Raw Story Reports Not Enough Ground Swell of Opposition to Alito
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 05:42 PM by radio4progressives
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Democratic_aides_admit_Alito_filibuster_long_0125.html

One aide said part of the problem is that Democratic senators haven’t felt a groundswell of opposition from constituents. Polls show that Alito’s nomination is supported by most Americans.

on edit: it's very difficult for me to accept this notion, given what has been reported, the numbers of petitions and telephone calls, and calls to action by every progressive organization i know of and that I'm subscribed to.

And that hasn't been enough?

2. The building where I work shook for a couple of minutes
It may have been HVAC engineers up on the roof.

Or maybe a minor earthquake.

Would you believe it was the Marines blowing up some expired ordnance?

17. OK, OK, I'll give you a straight answer
There is no "groundswell" among the people who have any power to stop the confirmation of Judge Alito: Congress.

Very few of our most promiment so-called leaders have the backbone to do anything about it beyond lip service. They're much more concerned with keeping their own fat jobs, nice offices, and prestige.

And it's ultimate the fault of all of us, the voters, who keep electing the kind of people who can talk big but at the end of the day care more about themselves than they do about the good of the country.

3. What utter nonsense!
What in the hell do they do with the petitions that we sign?? Do they not read them? Do they not tally them to see how many people do not want Alito? Though my aunt is a good friend and I cannot stand KBH, at least she does send me form letter acknowledging that she and her staff do get my letters.

4. I can't believe that & I have the phone bill to prove it!
I have made at least 30 phone calls in just the last three days, I have to believe the others here have made as many calls. There are other groups where people are doing the same. there has to be a groundswell, I think they are playing us.

6. As a matter of interest..
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 05:47 PM by radio4progressives
The name of the 'Senior Aide' who is the apparent source, does not seem to be mentioned in the Raw Story report, unless my eyes missed it.

It may be of interest to us, who that source is. It maybe be of interest to DU members/activists to ask Raw Story to disclose the name of that Aide so that we can offer a bit of fact checking on that assertion.

But I'll leave that to others to judge, whether or not that's a good idea or not, or if it is a meaningful pursuit of action.

8. Bah, I'll believe it when I see it
Raw Story has been wrong before. And it's just one anonymous aide.

Could be a bit of disinformation meant to discourage us, as if the fight was over BEFORE it was over. Because people are giving up NOW, when the vote isn't until Friday or so.

Nice plan for someone who wanted to stop a groundswell.

this is matter is far beyond the typical game of high stakes politics. this is CROSSING THE RUBICON to a Permanent State of FASCISM, imo.

I appreciate very much the report from Senator Reid's office..
