My emails to Feinstein and Boxer re: Alito

Please oppose Alito for the Supreme Court and please, please, please filibuster this outrageous appointment.

Judge Alito is an extremist, far out of the mainstream of American opinion. When confronted with the extremist opinions he stated during the Reagan administration, his "defense" was essentially that he lied on his resume.

He also lied to the Senate, under oath, when he said he would not rule in any cases involving Vanguard. Then he ruled in Vanguard cases in which he had a conflict of interest. So he is not only a liar. He's a corrupt liar and a serial liar.

In these hearings for his appointment to the Supreme Court, by refusing to give substantive answers to any serious questions, he has mocked the Senate and laughed at the very idea of separation of powers.

Given that our current president is making claims to have legal power to do anything at all that he wants to do (Please tell me how that would make him any different from an absolute monarch!), we now need more than ever independent judges who will stand up to abuses of power rather than rubberstamping them.

And, I might add, we need independent Senators who will stand up to executive usurpation of power.

Judge Alito is corrupt, an extremist, a serial liar who lied under oath in his previous Senate confirmation hearings, and he will be a rubberstamp for the monarchical presidency that George Bush claims to have.

3. Regarding the filibuster

one thing I have been hearing over and over is that if the dems filibuster than the repugs will pull out the nuclear option. At some point in time we will need to take that chance IMHO. It is sort of like Opie in Mayberry who was afraid of getting punched in the face over a nickle. At some point you have to let the fight begin and get it over with. Is every issue going to be decided based on the fear of the the nuclear option? I think that the repubs wouldn't actually do it, at least not until after the 2006 elections. Another alternative I think would be to talk to those repubs who don't want to vote yes on Alito. The dems will filibuster if they choose not to vote yes on the nuclear option.

I hope they filibuster and I hope they walk out at the SOTU as soon as * tells his first lie.
