i was at my dermatolgist's office today. it's in scottsdale, az. his
clientel are quite well-off (i don't live in scottsdale). anyway he's a republican which most doctors and lawyers are but his staff are all democrats. his receptionist gave me a copy of some magazine (didn't look which one), but it had a picture of cheney on the front cover. as i was returning to my seat i exclaimed "that man is truly evil". one of the clients saw the picture and said "why do you say that"? i answered "you're obviously a republican or you would know what i mean". of course, we got into a heated debate -- another woman jumped in but it's like these people can't think for themselves. when i mentioned iraq she said "we're fighting them there so we don't have to here". some of her remarks were right out of the words of the administration. fortunately i was called in to see the doctor because we were getting quite loud. when i got into the examining room the receptionist and medical assistant came in and we were joking about it. receptionist said "i bet she listens to rush limbaugh". i was going to go back out and give the woman my copy of the letter that i got from the DNC, but we figured we better not that the doc would get angry at us.

the thing is i wasn't shocked. the well-to-do go for the republicans unless they have a moral conscience. oh by the way she mentioned that clinton was too busy pulling his zipper down. i was about to answer her on that when i got called in. probably would have told her that no self-respecting woman (or man) would give georgie a blow job.

just thought i would share that with my fellow DUers.

5. I was a 16 year old
male and politics was the last thing on my mind at the time.

We lived in a condo, on a small lake, off 28th(I think) between Peoria and Cactus. We were very close to Metro Center Mall. Is the mall still there? I think the address was 2714 West Desert Cove Dr. I also attended Moon Valley High. Is it still there?

But still there. Moon Valley's still around - my sister went to a Red Mountain Moon Valley BBall game a week ago to see a friend (now assistant coach for RM).

13. I live in Boulder, CO. My mom lives in Mesa, and my sister went
to visit her for the winter break (my sister's husband lives with my mother - long story involving a long-term temp job for Boeing). I talk to one of my sisters or my mother every other day or so, so I almost always know what's going on in the Valley (and one of my sisters has a LOT of Valley friends...).

I'll be there for a week in May. Pray for a late summer, if you would!

Hey, maybe we can have a DU meetup in Phoenix that week??

Mom's 50th B-day is that weekend, so she wanted a week of everybody. (But knowing my family, I will need escape. Dammit.)

I've got a date with AZDemDist6 to hit SAS fabrics while I'm there... but a meetup would be grand.

Is Four Peaks Pub still making pretzels? (There was another pub that used to make pretzels in Scottsdale, I think, but I think they've closed up shop...)

some office buildings on the block now. metro center is still there. i used to shop there when i first moved here. i don't go down that way too much any more except to see my dentist who is on peoria and 28th. it's changed quite a bit. not so nice any more. and i think moon valley high is still there. is that the one that's around 19th ave and thunderbird.

you wouldn't recognize phoenix now. i live up north of carefree highway up on a hillside. but just south of me is a large subdivision with houses on top of each other. and carefree hwy has a big strip mall right near I 17. they just keep building and even though they widen the freeways it's still too much traffic. the price of growth. i liked it better when i first moved here, but i don't see myself ever leaving. i feel very connected to phoenix. probably had a past life here. lol

i see you're in raleigh. i know that's built up quite a bit too. my mom and my sister lived in greenville, s.c. for 22 years. now sis is in vermont, my 2 nieces who are grown now both live outside DC and mom is here in sun city.

22. I'm sorry to hear that my old
neighborhood is going down hill. Moon Valley High was/or is on 35th and Cactus.

I did not like Phoenix when I lived there, because of my High School experience. I took the advanced curriculum. I was considered unpopular b/c of this. I lettered at MV and still have the jacket, but that didn't matter.

By contrast, I moved from a school in a small town called Sanford, NC.(pop. at the time about 12000). I'd finished two years of Latin when we moved to Phoenix. I was told by MV High that they didn't offer third year Latin. Well, if you know my Mom, she wouldn't take that. Due to her efforts, I had third year Latin, taught to me during the time the Latin teacher was conducting detention hall. Now that's a weird situation, I'm translating Caesar's Gallic wars while the teacher is trying to maintain order in detention class. Just surreal. I returned to NC the next year and my small town had a fourth year of Latin. As a result, when I entered UNC-Chapel Hill, I placed out of first semester Latin and was able to fulfill my foreign language requirement in second semester Latin.

When we moved to Phoenix, my parents wanted to send me to Brophy Prep. I told them no way was I going to a religious school. Knowing what I know now, I was probably wrong.

than you. i'm 64. when i was in high school in order to take a college prep class latin was mandatory. i suffered through 2 years of it. the nice thing was i started 1st year spanish during my second year of latin so spanish was a breeze. i remember caesar and the gallic wars. wasn't it something like gallia est umna divisa in partes tres. don't know if my spelling if right. it's been a long time. my mom who is 83 studied 4 years of latin. can't even imagine that.

well i hope after all that studying that you are in a profession that you like.

25. Latin
I may make a fool of myself b/c I have had no reason to translate Latin since 1982. But here goes.

est Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur.

It is that Gaul is greatly divided into three factions. One is Belgium, the other is the French, and the third are the Celts who speak for Gaul. (Could be that the Celts speak for Caesar in this translation). I have not even tried to translate Latin since 1982, so this could all be wrong.

58. Hi BBinancan
My teaching assistant's daughter attends Moon Valley High. I'm not impressed with their curriculum at all. I thought that her sophomore English reading list was a joke. But they seem happy with the school.
My son graduated from Brophy as a Nat. Merit Scholar and had a wonderful experience there. Brophy is Jesuit run, very different from a typical "religious" school. Phoenix has grown considerably and continues to do so. There's a lot of competition to get into Brophy now.

In a speech I saw he said that WE had to get out and convince people the GOP was wrong. That he or Kerry wouldn't be believed, and that raising money alone wouldn't help, but that every time you heard someone say something right wing, or you get some forwarded right wing email, hit "reply all" and rebut it. That people can convince other people better than politicians.

i actually approached this particular doctor -- his receptionist told me that he knew mark warner personally. so i asked him what he thought about warner. he said "he can really work a room -- he's smart, charming". i said "would you cross over and vote for him". he hesitated and said "he didn't think warner had enough experience being a one-time governor". he also told me that his sister who lives in virginia is good friends with warner.

38. Wow! I guess we really do become our parents?
My mom's always been a dem and so was her father - but my grandmother was a rep. So, politics were an off-limit topic in the house - it just wasn't brought up because there would be a fight if it was. My mom then then went on to marry a rep! Again, politics isn't brought up in the house - although every now and then I get in a jab here and there (and my mom just rolls her eyes and asks me, "why do you start these things??"). I'm not married but I'm guessing if history is bound to repeat itself, then I'm marrying a rep!!

Did your husband always look like his dad or more so as he's gotten older?

my husband's daughter. very strong genes.

even though my family were dems -- becoming a dem was my choice. i've just always felt that the dems were looking out for the little guy and the repubs were for the rich. of course, both parties have changed. i remember 1960 -- i was 19 and so upset that i couldn't vote for JFK. back then you had to be 21. when i reached voting age, i couldn't wait to get to the poles. my husband was a dem when i met him. i don't know exactly when he changed. when we moved to phoenix you could register to vote when you got your arizona drivers license. a postcard came in the mail for him confirming that he was a registered republican. my mouth fell open. thought i would faint. last night he said that he doesn't consider himself a repub. i think maybe he's beginning to see the light. he likes warner, but he hates the liberals, i.e., kennedy, boxer, michael moore. he was shocked last week when i told him i had e-mailed kennedy thanking him for his stance on alito and for all he's done for our country over the years.

i consider myself a liberal but i'm realistic. i don't think we can get a liberal elected. that's why i'm favoring warner right now. my feeling is once we take back congress and the white house, then we can proceed with our liberal agendas.

BTW: nancegreggs is my younger sister. i'm sure you've read her inspirational articles and posts on the DU.

:D That's what my mom always says about me because I look so much like her at each age - I even had a baby picture of hers in with my baby pictures for years because I thought it was me!

I actually started out as a Rep, probably because politics weren't talked about too much at home. I have always had the same ideas and opinions, I was just too naive to know that the Dems fit me better than the Reps and I had a Rep boyfriend when I registered to vote (ah, the stupidity of youth!). Once I actually took a look at the parties and got involved, I immediately realized my mistake and switched!! Your husband sounds like my dad - he's a Republican technically, but actually a little liberal in his thinking and support (and he can't stand Bush & Co.). But, he also doesn't like the true liberals like Kennedy.

Yes, I have seen nancegreggs' posts! What a small world!!!

74. That's funny! Sounds like a good story is behind that...
You know, I've made comments to people in Costco when they were perusing books of a political nature - either for or against them. So far only one looked like she wanted to slap me - luckily most seem to agree with my sentiments! I just bought State of War there the other day and the woman behind me in line said, "oh, that looks good - but you know you're just going to wind up even more angry after you read it" - I told that's ok, we all need a shot in the activist arm one in a while!

My dad's actually a bit older - he's going to be 76 this year. Are you from Canada originally? I'm originally from the East Coast (born in NYC, then grew up just outside of DC) but I've lived here for 15 years this March.

75. no. we were born in brooklyn, new york. i lived in queens and
worked in manhattan until late 89 when we moved here. nancy moved to canada in 74 when her first husband got a job at columbia records. he was in the music business. she hated canada at first -- always wanted to move back to ny. but now she has her group of friends. she's on husband #3 who's also from the states and she feels it's safe there, she's got universal health care, etc. she lives right in downtown toronto. subway runs under her house, but that's what she likes. now i, on the other hand had enough of city living. i love the quiet of the desert especially up where i am now. i also hate cold weather. i thought you had mentioned one time that you had lived in ny.

i'll give you a brief synopsis of nance's story. my parents split up when i was 14. nancy was 7 and our baby sister was just a year old. mom wanted to get on with her life and started to go out at night and socialize so i was left home to take care of my younger sisters. and yes, i remember putting a pillow over nancy's face and threatening to suffocate her because i didn't want her to tell my mom that i had friends over when i was supposed to be doing homework. i was surprised that she remembered that. geez, the stupid things we do when we're kids. lol

We moved to southern VA when I was 5 or 6 and then to northern VA just outside of DC. I consider NY my home and I miss it. I definitely don't miss the snow and bitter cold weather though - I like fall and cooler weather, but nothing below 50 degrees!! My parents are older and live here though, so I'll be here for a while but some day I might move back east, we'll see. Then again, one of the two things I didn't like about Arizona was that it seemed so "small" compared to what I was used to - that's certainly changed and I don't say that anymore. (The other "complaint" I have is the lack of beaches, LOL, but for the sake of Californians, I'm hoping that will not change!) So, I may just stay here forever - you never know what will happen!

I've never been to Canada but would like to go - my company is actually headquartered outside of Toronto but I haven't been yet. I'd also like to visit Vancouver - seems beautiful!

It is funny what we remember from childhood - sounds as if you are all close and your sisters were lucky to have you as a babysitter, despite the pillow incident, LOL. I'm an only child, so I love hearing sibling-stories!

79. actually we were born in queens. the hospital was just over the
brooklyn borderline. spent most of my youth in ridgewood, queens. then my parents bought a house out near bayshore, L.I. i spent my teen years there, but after graduating high school -- it was hard to find good jobs on the island so i moved back to ridgewood with my grandmother and worked in manhattan. i would go home on weekends, but then it would be every other weekend and once a month. then i met my 1st husband -- we got married in 1960 -- our child was born in 61. we stayed together 6 years with a 2 year separation in between and then finally decided to divorce early in 67. so i sowed my wild oats. i worked in a beauty salon in greenwich village and many nights we would go out and party right after work. i met my 2nd husband 1970. we married in 71 -- been together ever since.

my first time in phoenix was 1984 -- a business trip with my husband. i fell in love with it. it was the end of may and it was 114 so i knew what i was in for. my husband wanted to stay in new york until he got a promotion to a higher level. once he did we waited about 18 months and then he requested the transfer. i love phoenix -- it's like my soul is here. when i was younger i could have never left NY -- i loved everything there, except the cold. but as i got older things changed. i was 48 when we moved here so i was ready for the peace and quiet.

i miss the beaches too. i've been to san diego 2x -- actually outside of san diego a place called lemon grove -- they have a place called the optimimum health institute where none of the food is cooked. i did okay the first time, but the second time i couldn't tolerate it -- thought i was going to barf. lol

P.S. to CatMother: I hope you brought Mommy's attention to THAT post -- after all of these years, I am VINDICATED!!!!!

Now, if you could just own up to the fact that you carved MY INITIALS into Grandma's dining room chair ...

15. It seems all too often money is the root of everything in our society
Nothing is done without money.
Nothing exists outside of money.
Everything exists within money.

That seems to be the new "American dream."

While I agree most Dr's are Rethug, I disagree on the lawyers. They often lean Dem. Lawyers are the backbone of my fundraising machine here in the north.

doctors are our friends than lawyers. At least in my personal experience.

No, I'm not running for office but I help those who do as well as local and Cong. District organizations.

we never discussed politics. i recently did a google search on a lawyer that i had worked with. well besides being president and CEO of a phone company, he also gave $500.00 to the bush campaign.

28. "we're fighting them there so we don't have to here"
I hate that justification most of all. I recently wrote a letter to the editor (that got published) in response to an article using that same line. Here is a portion of it:

That argument requires us to approve of using innocent Iraq citizens—women and children—as human shields. She suggests that we created chaos in a country, opening its borders to terrorists, destroying its infrastructure, killing its citizens, simply to hide behind the men, women and children of Iraq as a battleground for our soldiers to shoot back, with less cost to American lives. What about the thousands of innocent Iraqi lives that were destroyed? Of the many false justifications for invading Iraq, this is one of the most cowardice. It is not only arrogant in its assumption that Iraqi lives are less important than our own, it requires us to suspend compassion, accountability, and any values that we use in defining what it means to be American.

29. when she made that remark i asked her if she thought bush was
keeping us safe. she said "yes". i told her that she was deluding herself, that our borders are a mess and that we have not been attacked because terrorists take their time. i said "it took them from 93 (first world trade) to 2001". said that "terrorists are very patient". then the other woman jumped in and said clinton had 2x he could have gotten osama. i said "actually it was 3 and the reason he didn't bomb him was because of the collateral damage -- that there were children there". these 2 didn't seem to think that that was important because terrorists kill their own anyway including children. now the interesting thing is i just woke up a little while ago, put on the news and there's osama saying more or less that they were taking their time. i didn't get the whole thing.

i also told her that there were no terrorists in iraq until we went in and now it's a hot bed for terrorists.

46. good question. when i moved here in 89 it was a big issue. we've
always celebrated it here in phoenix and scottsdale. maybe some other parts of arizona don't know that we're in the 21st century. if you take a look at what kind of people live in some small towns you can see that they're backward.

actually, the only reason it got passed was they threatened us with the superbowl. said they wouldn't have it here if we didn't do MLK.

42. Ask London, if we are fighting them "over there"
I mean honestly, who are we kidding here? Thats the reply I give when ever I hear that "fighting them over there" (meaning Iraq)

And not for nothing....here, there, anywhere....we have lost an additional 2,000 soldiers with 16,000 wounded, billions of dollars spent for no WMD's & No Bin Laden. Hell, not even the Antrax killer.

This is the republican "plan" to combat terrorism? Well guess what? It sucks.

And it's a big failure, too.

Not to mention...how cowardly is it to fight our fight in someone else's country?

As for Clinton's "zipper" ask them about Rudy's G's...3 wives and god knows how many girl friends. Nothing like trying to throw your wife and kids out of Gracie Mansion so your mistress can move in.

Between the male hooker in the White House for our lil "Cheerleader in Chief" , falafel O'reilly, toe sucker Dick Morris , Newt "dump your wife if she has cancer" Gingrich or Junkie Rush, et al...republicans have no corner on morality.

Or Common sense.

48. even with slashing health care funding i think they still make a
very good living, especially if you're a plastic surgeon or dermatologist where insurance usually isn't involved. i guess it's capital gains taxes and the other things that people with a lot of money have. i mean i saw a little bit of the cut with bush, but i don't think it's anything near what the rich get. that's why they say it's tax cuts for the wealthy.

51. Very proud to tell ya'll ...
... that Catmother is my big sister.

When she moved to Arizona, I knew the entire state was in for a rough time. She's the nicest person in the world, but she takes no crap from Republicans.

If you've been wondering why the NSA is wire-tapping phone calls, it's because the Repubs in Phoenix want a head's-up as to when Catmother will be at the mall -- they tend to skip any shopping that day, afraid of another confrontation.

I'm telling you, I know from experience. She'll put a pillow over your head and threaten to suffocate you, if you tell Mom that she had Carol and Jenny over to party when she was supposed to be babysitting and doing her homework and -- oh, oh -- a little TOO MUCH information.

Anyway, I'm glad she gives the Phoenix Repubs a piece of her mind every chance she gets -- that, my friends, is the DEMOCRATIC WAY!

64. don't know where you live but here in arizona it's hard -- one of
my docs is actually a fundie. he's been taking care of me for 14 years and never once has he mentioned religion to me. i know about him because sometimes i spend hours in his office getting chelation therapy or IV vitamins and many of his patients are from his church (including his pastor). now quite a few of them have tried to convert me. i'm sure he knows my beliefs through his patients. he's a great doc, 73 years old, up on all the latest and if people can't pay he treats them for free.

when i find a good doctor that i can get along with, i don't let political differences get in the way. hey, if i can live with a repub, i can have a repub doc.
