I seriously think Al Gore under-estimated the positive response he would get to his speech yesterday.
I have been reading James Carville's and Paul Begala's new book TAKE IT BACK. They point out how Kerry's operatives were furious at President Carter for giving what they deemed to be a "negative" speech at our last convention. And, I was furious, because I was so tired, and, before the speech came on, I fell asleep, and had to watch it the next day on CSPAN.
I thought President Carter's convention speech, which centered around the mendacity of the Bush Administration, was comparable to The Gettysburg Address, to use an analogy.
I called Al Gore's office today, to find out what follow-up was planned, to his speech. The person who answered the phone was polite and a consummate professional, but told me, "the speech stands alond." I am guessing that means "the speech speaks for itself," which I also believe, but now I am consumed by the thought that Al Gore, like President Carter, was just doing the moral thing, however the chips may have come down.
Al Gore, I am calling you out. Follow up.
