. . . out.
It is time for the Democratic leadership to perform jujitsu on the following bit of Republican noise:
Demcrats only complain, they don't offer solutions. We need to lead our "leaders" and open their eyes to the facts:
- Racketeers have seized control of the executive branch. Offering solutions to the Bush Syndicate makes about as much sense as offering flight plans to hijackers.
- Don't be duped by some pablum about "offering solutions to the American People." You no longer have sufficient power to implement any solution. Even a 90-Senator Anti-Torture "solution" gets wiped out by neofascist use of a "signing statement." You are impotent (maybe that'll get through).
- Moreover, supporting the pretense of their legitimacy by offering "plans" to "persuade" them to "mend their ways," rather than demanding immediate Impeachment and removal from office, is to be complicit with their actions.
Our Democratic leaders just need to ground their response in reality. (General Rule: You'll always cut through their noise if you boil things down to simple truths and moral principles. If it doesn't seem to work, you need to do more "boiling.")
Sample ResponseWhen the CEO and leadership team of a corporation lie to the board and commit criminal acts, you don't offer them plans for the future, you blow the whistle and drive them out.
The Executive Branch is a rogue operation. The facts are undeniable. They are violating the most basic tenets of our constitutional democracy. They are torturers, spies, and terrorists. To coerce the nation into the illegal war they were hell-bent on waging, they terrorized us with the most colossal bomb threat in history -- mushroom clouds over our cities in 45 minutes.
You don't need to be a constitutional scholar to recognize such flagrant crimes and abuses of power. You don't even need a high school diploma to know that the absolute power they are wielding is never freely given to a leader; it is only taken by deception or force.
We know all we need to know to Impeach Bush and Cheney right now.
We cannot look to the future until we have removed the officials who are abusing their power from office and taken time to determine the full extent of the damage they done.
In short, the Democrats should absolutely NOT put forward a "plan" or agenda -- or even say they are working on one. The public doesn't need any more reports; we don't need an investigation (unless it is part of the prosecution) we just need our leaders to publicly declare the truth.
A few thoughts for when the time comes to look to the future:
Americans share a host of values and goals. We know that true individual freedom cannot exist without freedom from fear of economic hardship. We know that a vigorous private sector cannot exist if work is not valued. We know that economic security requires access to quality education and medical care. We know that private industry can only flourish and create prosperity for all when the power of the people to protect their interests is embodied in strong public institutions.
To achieve our common goals, we know we need to restore common sense to how we distribute the costs of citizenship.
A government is not legitimate if it is not responsive to its citizens. The mechanisms of Government that enable the people to make their common goals a reality haven't been working. To restore legitimacy to our government, we need to do more than remove officials who have abused their power; we must also reconnect the public to their government.
This nation belongs to its people. As we move forward, we will not tolerate "leaders" who declare that the nation cannot afford to make our common goals a reality. It is the people as a whole who decide what they will or won't pay for.
