All the King's, I Mean Rummy's, Men
Secy. of Defense Rummy, as DU'er noted in earlier posts, has a new line of succession behind him. Rather than having the Secy's of the Armed Forces, the Prez. signed into effect a shift of positions to enable policy wanks to be the power behind the Secy.--and able to take over for him when he is picnicking or getting his mini-mullet trimmed.

Who are the new powers at DoD?

Stephen Cambone, Ph.D. Undersecretary for Intelligence. Lots of nuclear connections, Center for Strategic and International Studies, National Institute for Public Policy, and of course PNAC.

"Cambone’s attempt to split hairs on whether the Geneva Conventions were applicable to intelligence gathering in Iraq and his awkward defense of the role of military intelligence in interrogations put him at odds with the U.S. Army general who first investigated abuses at Abu Ghraib prison."

Eric S. Edelman, Deputy Undersecretary for Policy, a career "diplomat," whose last posting was Turkey.

"His latest assignment was as ambassador to Turkey, where he gained a reputation as a meddlesome critic of the Turkish government at a time when anti-Americanism began flaring up throughout the country."...snip...
"Rather than improving U.S.-Turkish relations, Edelman's two-year stay in Ankara was a lightning rod for deepening anti-U.S. sentiment in Turkey. Typical of the anti-U.S. and anti-Edelman sentiment in the media was an assessment by columnist Ibrahim Karagul that "Edelman is probably the least-liked and trusted American ambassador in Turkish history."

Most puzzling, however, is the Undersecretary for Acquisitions and Logistics, a former Paper Prince: Kenneth J. Krieg, who used to be VP and General Mgr. of Office & Consumer Papers Division of International Paper. He has been at DoD since mid 2001.

I can only surmise that one of the assets Mr. Krieg brought to DoD was the Red Tape Division of his former employer, though it was probably Bush league by comparison with what was already there.

So that is Rummy's bunker bunch. The Uniforms have been pushed out as too narrow in their perspective.
