Announcing the Best New Government Program Since 1984!!!
Over the past few weeks we've all been listening to Bush apologists defend his recent illegal spying activities. For those of you who don’t know, the administration has been spying on American citizens without going through the legal process of obtaining a search warrant before doing so. He's even bypased FISA, a special legal court that has rapidly approved all but four of over 19,000 warrant requests since its inception in 1978.

The “premise” of these spying activities is apparently for national security purposes. However, we haven’t been informed of who among us has been spied upon. Not to worry, though – you can trust the Bush administration to always work on behalf of the best interests of the country as a whole – I think their track record speaks for itself on this issue.

Supporters of the president say that such measures are considered legal according to the Patriot Act. Now I’m the first to admit that I haven’t read the entire text of that bill (and neither has 99% of congress for that matter), but I’m pretty sure that there’s nothing in there that suspends the 4th Amendment to the Constitution (not the one about alcohol – the one that guarantees us all a right to privacy, silly). Even if the Patriot Act tried to alter our Constitution, it would have had to undergo a different approval procedure in order to get passed.

One argument I’ve heard in support of this illegal behavior is that domestic spying is a necessary tool in the war on terror. I’ve also heard that if this program were in place prior to September 11, 2001, the terrorist attacks may have been prevented. This might be true, but I fully believe that they also could have been prevented if the president would have read his Presidential Daily Briefing (PDB) a month prior to September 11 titled “Bin Laden Determined To Strike In U.S.” – which kinda spelled out what was going to happen anyway.

Fox News personality (I refuse to call anyone over at Fox a "journalist") Tony Snow has stated on the air that he knows that the president is only using his spying powers on "bad guys". I have yet to hear what his definition of "bad guy" is, nor have I heard any proof from him that illustrates upon whom the administration is actually conducting surveillance. But he does work for Fox News – so I think it’s safe to assume that he knows all the inside poop.

Even on progressive talk shows, callers seem to pop up on the air that support this recent wave of spying. The most common argument falls along the lines of "If you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn't care who spies on you", or "The only ones who complain about spying are those people who don't want to get caught doing something wrong".

If you're one of these apologists - I'd like to propose the creation a program that will allow you to put your money where your mouth is. I will call it the “I’ve Got Nothing To Hide!” Act.

Under this wonderful new voluntary program, you can allow the government complete access to your home at all times. They can install multiple cameras in every room of your house (including the bathroom). You can also make a key for them so that they can come and go as they please. In addition, you will maintain a diary/journal that you can turn in on a daily basis so that they can monitor all of your out-of-house activities.

Yeah Right – In My Dreams!!!

For those of you who are really eager to help out, you could even wear a recording device that allows the government to listen to any conversation you may have during the course of your day. You could even share your inner-most thoughts by stating them clearly into the microphone during down-time.

What do you say? If you really do have nothing to hide, then you should be one of the first in line to volunteer for this great program! What better way to show your patriotism and loyalty by giving up any shred of privacy that you may have left?

Just think about it! This program will finally get rid of all terrorist influences in our country, so that we can all finally be safe. Those who don't sign up to be completely observed and recorded on a 24/7 basis obviously have something to hide, and likely hate America to boot. We can simply arrest them without cause and keep them jailed without charge for as long as we want. We don't want to do it, but it's a small price to pay to keep America safe, and to protect the freedoms that we all hold so dear.

The rest of us can go on with our lives as usual with everything we say or do being recorded and filtered to weed out any potential anti-American thought. Just think of how secure we'll all be!

This is the only mechanism I can think of that will preserve the American way of life into the future. So sign up today, freedom lovers! After all, too much of a great thing is never enough. That is, of course, unless you have something to hide.

3. Okay, I'm in!

Great idea on a number of levels:

(a) How many times have you said, "Man, if I could have five minutes with Bush (Cheney, Rummy, etc.), I'd give them a piece of my mind?" Well, now you can REALLY give them an earful, any time of the day.

(b) Re access to my house - My dresser, office desk, and kitchen drawers are always a mess. If some agent goes through them on a regular 'search' basis, he'll probably tend to put them back together in some orderly fashion.
I'd also leave a can of Pledge and a dust-cloth in clear view. If said agent wants to wipe off his own prints (so I don't know he's been there), he may as well do a little waxing while he's at it.

(c) I always feel guilty about going out with the girls from the office after work, because it means the dogs are left alone all day. A snooping agent could provide a little company while I'm out. I'll also leave their bowls and pet food out on the counter. They tend to bark incessantly when a stranger is around, so I know he'll feed them to keep them quiet. That means I won't have to rush home!

Yeah, if you think about it, this works on a lot of levels ...

14. This plot to suspend Constitution goes back to the Reagan/Bush Years
http://www.theforbiddenknowledge.com/hardtruth/wake_up_america.html===On July 5, 1987 the front page of the Miami Herald Newspaper carried a now famous article describing secret White House plans to:

A.) DECLARE AN UNDEFINED "NATIONAL EMERGENCY,"

B.) RE-OPEN CONCENTRATION CAMPS FOR PREVENTIVE DETENTION OF LEGAL
DISSIDENTS CERTAIN ETHNIC GROUPS, AND

C.) SUSPEND OUR UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION

---***---

Those of us viewing the Iran-Contragate hearings, then being broadcast live on TV, had our curiosity peaked when one committee member began inquiring about an article alleging secret White House plans to suspend the Constitution.

We were even more puzzled when committee chair Daniel Inouye interrupted him demanding all discussion on that question take place in closed session, out of public hearing.

Not content to wonder, I researched the original article, transcribed it, and now present it to you for your urgent consideration. You have a right to read this. In fact, you'd better know about it because it's about secret White House plans to remove your rights by SUSPENDING OUR UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. It's about a government which we, the people, did NOT elect but which has gained power nonetheless.

What follows is not the whole story but a crucial and overlooked part of it. Read "between the lines" and very carefully. This is not some paranoid's nightmare or some fanatic's fantasy. This is reality in the Reagan White House.

---***---
Please copy this article and circulate it among your friends and co-workers. If George Bush gets into the White House, we'll have "elected," or had selected for us, precisely the same carnivorous crew comprising The Secret Government referred to in this article.

Very long, very good article -- now if only someone would come up with some idears to stop it. :spray:

15. Well, duh...the "bad guys" are those who blow up trains
and weddings, so sayeth the Chimp. Those are the only folks he's
monitoring, so not to worry.

I do have to wonder though, if these are "bad guys" who are guilty of
blowing up trains and weddings, and are hanging around the US making
phone calls, the government obviously knows where they are...

So why don't they just arrest them, and hold them indefinitely
without charges? Wouldn't be the first time.

17. No President Is Above the Law - Strongly worded, very good article by Byrd
http://byrd.senate.gov/newsroom/news_dec/law_for_all.html~~~~ Senator Byrd
December 19, 2005

"No President Is Above the Law

Senator Byrd on Monday expressed his strong concerns about possible violations of the Constitution in the Bush Administration's admitted practice of spying on American citizens.

Americans have been stunned at the recent news of the abuses of power by an overzealous President. It has become apparent that this Administration has engaged in a consistent and unrelenting pattern of abuse against our Country’s law-abiding citizens, and against our Constitution.

We have been stunned to hear reports about the Pentagon gathering information and creating databases to spy on ordinary Americans whose only sin is choose to exercise their First Amendment right to peaceably assemble. Those Americans who choose to question the Administration’s flawed policy in Iraq are labeled by this Administration as “domestic terrorists..."

Gets stronger and angrier. Thank Byrd and ask him to publically support Rep. Conyers bill to impeach -- everyone has been bitchin' about Impeachment, now prove you are serious by responding to Conyers' request for help from US citizens by signing his letter:
http://www.johnconyers.com/ - Conyer's Action Items

"Join me, below, in sending the:

Letter Advising the President of Censure and Steps to Begin Special Committee Investigation

Dear Mr. President:

We are brave, proud, patriotic citizens of the United States. We love our country and are writing to express our profound disappointment with you and your administration for your conduct surrounding the Iraq War, the collection and use of intelligence, and your disrespect for the laws of
this great nation..."

21. Hold on there, Baba Looie...
So many 'right-thinking' (take that either way) people stand up and proudly proclaim that "I've got nothing to hide!"
Well, maybe. But do you really want ALL your private telephone, cel phone, and personal conversations, emails to friends, family, office workers spread out to view for a bunch of NSA voyeurs?

Consider for a minute all the subjects that come on the tapis:
The latest dirty joke. The hot new employee down in Accounting. The blind date last night who really was a disaster. The family member with a chronic illness. The child who is having difficulties in school. The joys of being a member of a dysfunctional family. The fight you had with your spouse...or conversely, the excellent and affectionate relationship you have with this person. The list of stuff you need to pick up on the way home...thanks, honey.
All the little things that aren't necessarily 'wrong' but you would prefer not to have them out on Front Street.

Rest assured, gang...these people will not view your life dispassionately, scientifically, or compassionately. Do you really want these agents treating your life with derision and contempt?
Because it's going to happen, you good little Americans.
It's gonna be Reality TV, but you won't be getting paid dime one...in fact, if you look at it, you are the one paying for the privilege.

Seriously, think about it for a minute. Does allowing the government to set you up on public display like a zoo exhibit really mean that you are a Patriot? Or are you something else?

Perfect. Let these loudmouth wing nuts bring Gonzalas and Buxh into their own homes on a voluntary basis. This will PROVE they have nothing to hide.
I'm sure they wouldn't mind given the "super patriot" status such a move would bring.

Civil rights seem to be a comodity that many don't mind taking away from a few.

Excellent perspective. Thanx.

I had a "discussion" with a person who thought what Bush was doing was OK. he thought spying was acceptable even thugh it violated the 4th amandment. so I asked him to let me have his phone, CC, & bank account records for the past year. Of course he said "no" so I replied, "if you won't let a friend see your personal info, then why will you let a total stranger have it?" Great display of backpedalling followed.

32. Giggle Water or a Bum's Rush
Yep! I loved that too.

Those whom may think it was ok for the current shall we say “non-conformity” to violate the constitution and overstep congress must simply educate themselves in the U.S Constitution Articles 1-5. I especially like Article 5 “Process of Amendment”. Although I loved the post on “give me your cell phone and bank account records” I cannot ever forget some governmental history that fits right in. So if anyone thinks it is ok for the executive branch of government to bypass the judicial branches or legislative branches (like our Congress and House of Representatives) simply for the sake of borrowing it along with the U.S Treasury and Military for a short while then let me have a signed blank check on your savings account. Its ok you can trust me…

The federal deficit now quickly approaches $500 billion.

Just maybe every American isn’t as stupid as some obviously thought.

Proposing to shutdown 33 military bases at home while building new bases in Iraq combined with terrorism defendants now having a possible legal loophole to avoid prosecution via illegal collection of evidence sure makes me feel allot safer. Maybe we should have followed the 1978 FISA that created the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that could have issued legal warrants.

I think were about to experience the Nixon flash dance so welcome to Thunder River the ride where Giggle Water and a Bum’s Rush may be just around the corner.

33. August 22, 2005 Letter from Senator Jim Talent
Thank you for contacting me to voice your concerns regarding the Patriot Act. I
appreciate the time you have taken to share your views with me, and I welcome the
opportunity to respond.

I was not in the Senate at the time the Patriot Act was passed in October 2001. Under the
circumstances, I would have supported the Act but would have been much more comfortable
with some provisions than others. I have studied the provisions in the Patriot Act that
are set to sunset in December 2005 and believe they can be categorized into three groups.

1. Provisions that expand existing procedures. Before the Patriot Act was enacted,
federal courts were able to authorize wiretapping for law enforcement purposes in
connection with a number of crimes. Sections 201 and 202 of the Patriot Act add crimes
relating to chemical weapons, violence committed against Americans overseas, and
multinational terrorism to this list.

2. Provisions that adapt existing procedures. Several original statutes were enacted
before many technological advances were achieved. Section 214 opens the Foreign
Intelligence Surveillance Authorization (FISA) pen register procedure to include both wire
and electronic communications (telephone, e-mail, Internet communications).

3. Provisions that create new powers. Section 212 permits communications service
providers to disclose customer records in emergency situations.

Given that America is at war, I have no problem allowing the government full power to
investigate individuals where it has some individualized basis for suspecting that person
of involvement with terrorism. I am much less comfortable with the government fishing
through the lives of a lot of people in an attempt to spot a few who might be suspicious.
The proper balance is to grant the government appropriate authority, where it has made a
creditable showing that it would be necessary and then hold officials to a high level of
accountability when and where that authority is exercised. As of this point, the law has
functioned well. The country has not been attacked again, and the various reports to
Congress and oversight committee hearings have shown little or no abuse of the law.
Again, thank you for contacting me. If I may be of further assistance, please don't
hesitate to call or write.

Thank you for your email. To contact me on this or any other subject, please go to
http://talent.senate.gov/Contact/default.cfm

Sincerely,
Senator Jim Talent

I'd like to know if I have your permission, to both read it on the air and to send to some of these hacks alluded to above.

If i have your permission, i'll need to know if the flyer is included or not.. ;)
