20. I don't believe it is their place to make such statements.

There are other organizations that watch over this type of things. Those organizations should be the ones pursuing this. This is especially true if they are receiving any federal or state money regardless of whether the money comes from this source or not. This is not saying that there should not be repercussions for the decisions made by Bush. The actions should not be taken by a group that fights for civil liberties.

It is pretty much EVERYONE'S obligation to speak up in defense of our democracy, our Constitution, and our Bill of Rights, and nobody does it better than the American Civil Liberties Union. (I don't agree with everything they do, but on balance they've served this nation and its people very well.)

As far as their source of funding, somehow I've always believed they were supported by donations, but if anyone knows otherwise, please inform.

There are a number of other public interest groups whose purpose is to do this type of thing. The ACLU should do what the mandate is to do. Specifically they should work to install the institutional framework to make sure this type of thing doesn't happen again and protect the people who released the information should the names become available. Actively pursuing this also compromises people’s opinion on to what extent they are bipartisan which decreases the effectiveness of their other actions.

22. What greater "Civil liberty" is there than the 4th amendment,

which is protection from unreasonable searches and seizures? The ACLU is in the business of defending the Bill of Rights. I believe that it is particularly appropriate for them to run this ad. especially since, our rights have been under attack ever since * was first installed in the White House.That is why I have been a card-carrying member since 2000.

29. They should be fighting for the rights of those people, which they are.

Calling for impeachment, in my opinion, oversteps their role. As I have said in my other response there are other groups that have the purpose of monitoring government accountability. These are the ones who should be leading any such initiative.

Unfortunately, there is a sizeable number of people out there who have nothing but contempt for the ACLU. But then again, if you hate the ACLU, you probably don't give a shit about this issue either.
