Did Ted Stevens say he was quitting the Senate last week?
It sure sounded like it to me, but knowing him, it was probably another empty promise.

You can hear what he said at the end of this radio montage from NPR's "Weekend Edition - Sunday"

Voices in the News

Listen to this story...(at link above)

Weekend Edition - Sunday, December 25, 2005 · A sound montage of some of the voices in this past week's news, including: President George W. Bush; Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI); New York Transit workers; a New York commuter; Transit Workers Union President Roger Toussaint; Rep. David Obey (D-WI); Sen. John Kerry (D-MA); Sen. Ted Steven (R-Alaska).

1. Ted Speaks the Truth?? (truth in bold)
When a reporter from the "Jim Lehrer News Hour" pressed him for an interview recently, she said: "Senator, what if I begged you to go to the microphones? All of America wants to hear from you."

"No they don't," barked Stevens, retreating to his ornate office in the Capitol.

2. Nope... I live in Anchorage and they brought that up in the news here..
They said it was an odd way to wrap-up the session, but he made it clear to the local media here that he's not going anywhere..

He's 82 or 83 and plans to run again when his term is up in 2008..

5. I have a lot of Alaska ties 20+ yrs working non -resident
it's seems to me the people of Alaska are a bitt weary... when I 1st worked there in "71" it had a very liberal view.

6. Alaska is an extremely "Independent" state...
Many more registered Independents than any other party. Pro-choice, lenient marijuana laws, etc..

BUT... the majority of residents vote for PRO-DRILLING candidates every single time, and they always will.

That certainly doesn't mean Democrats don't win --- they DO! But only pro-drilling Democrats

Which is why you haven't seen Alaska vote for a Democratic president in forever.. one issue voters... OIL, OIL, and OIL

9. I do think he has reached that age when he should be done.
I went to Ak. in the 70's and he was in that job. Now he acts like he has gone over the edge. Some people do not keep their mind in old age and my guess is his mind is not up to par any more.

4. BTW... Speaking of the Bridges to Nowhere..
One thing I never hear in the media (except for locally here in Anchorage) about those two bridges..

Is that the $315 million dollar bridge that would be built in Ketchikan, and would go to Gravina Island... is where the corrupt Republican Alaska Governor's (49th lowest approval rating in the nation) family owns a huge amount of land..

Also, the other bridge (low estimate is $231 million) would connect Anchorage to Point MacKenzie. This is the bridge that Congressman Don Young wants to call "Don Young's Way" .. :eyes:

And who are the largest land owners/developer waiting impatiently on the Pt. MacKenzie side chomping at the bit to get rich quick by selling waterfront lots? Don Young's daughter and son-in-law!!!

Americans are right to be outraged by the greed of Ted Stevens to get these two bridges built.. but they need to also should mention that Alaska residents have NEVER voted on either of these bridges..

If they're built, it's two prominent Republican politicans that will benefit $$$$$ the most..

8. Amazing. Gee, you'd think that the "liberal" media would have picked up
on this. Think of all the press that Whitewater got, and the Clintons LOST money on that deal. Why isn't the use of taxpayers money to enrich politicians and their families front page news?

10. If the Democratic leader attacked everything that's been going
on there wouldn't be time to go to the bathroom.

The media is dead. And many Dem Senators & Congressmen are walking zombies.
